Pre-Show – Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal
It’s really a shame that this match is not a part of the main card. Most fans seem to really get into the ATGMBR. Some even think winning it is a major accomplishment but the aftermath of said victory is not indicative of that. The first 2 winners, Cesaro and The Big Show, were given zero push after their victories. Baron Corbin has had a solid run since his win from last year and does seem to have a big future. But the prestige of winning a match with Andre The Giant’s name on it should mean something. It’s better than the pre-show.
But let’s stick with this year’s match. Going through the list of confirmed participants, there’s really only two potential winners here: Sami Zayn and Braun Strowman. Strowman is the obvious overwhelming based on size and recent success. Zayn has recently made clear his opposition to The Authority which usually leads a strong future program. Outside of those two, there is The Big Show but I highly doubt he wins a second ATGMBR. That doesn’t make sense. There’s always Dolph Ziggler but when was his last push? And Mojo Rawley. Come on, please. And then everyone else will pretty much just be there to get thrown out after a few minutes.
Outside of some surprise entrances from NXT, the writing is on the wall for Strowman. Plus the pre-show is not usually a place for surprises, it’s normally pretty straight forward. A Zayn win would be a tremendous, feel-good, underdog story so it probably won’t happen. Smart money here is on Strowman.
