On an episode of Table for 3 on the WWE Network, AJ Styles and Shawn Michaels discussed the match idea that had been thrown out there.
AJ Styles and Shawn Michaels were linked together during the end of 2016 and into 2017, with speculation around them facing off at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. It took place in San Antonio, TX, a location Michaels is all too familiar with.
However, the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 33 have come and gone, and obviously, HBK did not compete at either show. Styles faced John Cena for the WWE Championship at the Rumble, while also going head-to-head with Shane McMahon at the Show of Shows.
An upcoming episode of WWE Network’s Table for 3 features Styles, Michaels and Kevin Nash. One of the topics discussed was the idea of Styles vs. Michaels, which the Phenomenal One says he brought up about asking the Showstopper to do something at Royal Rumble. Michaels then says Vince McMahon approached him about being back in the ring.
A valiant effort from Styles to try to make this happen, but Michaels is sticking to his retirement. He lost a Retirement Match to the Undertaker at WrestleMania 26 in 2010, and has since made physical appearances on WWE TV, along with doing promo segments.
Styles vs. Michaels is a match that has to be saved for the WWE 2K franchise at this point. Unless the former D-Generation X member suddenly gets that itch back for one more match, we’re not going to see this happen. Plus, he’s already 51-years-old, which hurts those chances.
Maybe we’ll get Styles in a dream match scenario at a future WWE show. We saw this with his Cena match, but could there be someone else WWE decides to pair with him at a big event, like the 2017 SummerSlam pay-per-view, or the 2018 Royal Rumble?
