WWE Extreme Rules 2017 Match Card: Main Event Set

The main event of WWE Extreme Rules 2017 has been announced, which will determine the next contender to the Universal Championship.

When Braun Strowman went down with an elbow injury, it opened up the floodgates for the WWE Universal Championship scene. It looked like Strowman would contend for this belt at a future pay-per-view, but any plan for this will have to be sidelined, along with his presence at Extreme Rules, taking place on June 4.

So to open Monday’s episode of Raw, Kurt Angle addressed the Universal Championship, which Brock Lesnar will defend this summer. He confirmed Strowman’s status, while also making the main event of the Extreme Rules PPV. This will see Seth Rollins, Samoa Joe, Finn Balor, Bray Wyatt and Roman Reigns battle to become the No. 1 Contender to Lesnar’s title.

After the announcement, all five competitors came out to trade promos. Once Rollins entered the fray, this broke down into a brawl, leaving Balor standing tall in the ring.

This is as star-studded of a replacement main event for Extreme Rules as it gets. It features the top five stars of Raw‘s main event scene, including four who have held a World championship in WWE.

Presumably, the winner will get Lesnar at Great Balls of Fire on Sunday, July 9. This is the next Raw-exclusive show after Extreme Rules, and the Beast Incarnate’s first title defense since defeating Goldberg for the belt at WrestleMania 33. It breaks the sometimes-used, sometimes-not 30-day defense rule WWE has in place for championships, which was applied to Naomi after Elimination Chamber.
