With WWE Backlash this weekend, there’s still an underlying skepticism surrounding the main event. Despite the possibility of an upset, here’s why Randy Orton needs to retain.

WWE Backlash 2017 is set for May 21 at the Allstate Arena in Illinois, where Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal will battle it out for the WWE Championship.

However — ever since he became No. 1 Contender — people still aren’t sure whether or not Jinder Mahal was the right choice for Orton’s opponent.

With that being the case, imagine the polarizing opinions people will have if Mahal becomes champ.

There have been rumors floating around that Mahal might just be playing placeholder for another superstar. And — with that — it adds even more reason for Orton to retain at WWE Backlash 2017.

Their match together will only be Orton’s first title defense since winning the belt at WrestleMania 33. The feud only started when Jinder Mahal won the ‘Six-Pack Challenge’ on the April 18 edition of Smackdown — with help from the Singh Brothers (The Bollywood Boyz on the independent circuit). This led to Mahal become No.1  Contender.

In the following week, Mahal would attack Orton and literally steal the title before escaping in a limousine.

Things would escalate as Mahal interfered in Orton and Bray Wyatt’s match as WWE Payback 2017 — giving Wyatt the win.

Commissioner Shane McMahon would force Mahal to turn over the title belt on the following Smackdown.

And lastly, Mahal would pin Orton in a six-man tag team match on the latest edition of Smackdown, giving him momentum heading into WWE Backlash 2017.

Despite this, Orton still needs to win. So, here are the 3 reasons why Orton needs to beat Mahal

Note to reader: This was written before the last Smackdown before WWE Backlash 2017.
