Brock Lesnar and Samoa Joe collided to open Monday’s episode of WWE Raw.

At Extreme Rules, Samoa Joe won a fatal five-way match to become the next contender to the WWE Universal Championship, held by Brock Lesnar. This got confirmed for the main event of July’s Great Balls of Fire pay-per-view.

On the post-Extreme Rules episode of Raw, Joe cut an in-ring promo, but was interrupted by Paul Heyman. After an exchange, Joe put the Coquina Clutch on Heyman, causing him to immediately pass out. This set up Lesnar’s return for the following week, which Heyman confirmed during the show, marking the first appearance of the Universal Championship in over two months.

So, on Monday night, Lesnar and Heyman opened Raw. The Advocate spoke on last week’s attack, only to be interrupted by the Samoan Submission Machine. He walked right into the ring, shoved his Great Balls of Fire opponent, and started a brawl. This lasted for about three minutes, with Joe and Lesnar trading blows, including one devastating kick from the former.

Most of the locker room went to the ring to stop the fight, breaking up the two foes. This was while the crowd chanted “this is awesome.”

This only boiled the blood in this developing feud, which has the making of something successful. There’s still three weeks before Lesnar and Joe collide, but if this is the start of what’s to come, then WWE fans should sit back and enjoy what’s about to come.

Will Joe eventually win the title? That remains to be seen. Winning it before Lesnar makes a successful title defense seems unlikely, but WWE has taken advantage of hot angles before. Would they do that here or wait for another competitor?
