In an unexpected development, Jinder Mahal became WWE Champion at Backlash. Here’s why he should keep the title until SummerSlam.

Professional wrestling in 2017 has been weird. There’s been no shortage of strange occurrences in promotions all across the globe. But one of the most unexpected things to happen this year in WWE was the rise of Jinder Mahal.

The Maharaja returned to WWE last summer as a part of the brand split. Initially, he slotted into the same type of role he had in his first run with the company – little more than enhancement talent. But as spring rolled around, Jinder started to build a little momentum.

At WrestleMania, Mahal was the runner-up in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. He then moved to SmackDown Live in the Superstar Shakeup, and found himself Number One Contender for the WWE Championship.

Then, he won the title from Randy Orton at Backlash, and here we are today. Orton gets his rematch for the title at Money in the Bank, but Mahal seems primed to be champ for the long haul. With his biggest test to date looming, though, can Jinder continue his improbable WWE Championship reign?

As it’s only been a month, there’s still plenty of life left in a Jinder Mahal world title run. A (second) victory over Orton would go a long way to legitimizing Jinder as a serious champion, something few would have though possible merely two months ago.

With that, here are five reasons Jinder Mahal should remain WWE Champion until SummerSlam.
