Raw Tag Team Championship Match, 2 out of 3 falls
The Hardy Boyz (Matt & Jeff) vs. Sheamus & Cesaro (c)
Result: Draw – each team scored one fall, and the final fall ended in a double count out
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Starting a 2 out of 3 falls match with less than 15 minutes officially to go on your wrestling show is irresponsible. What makes it more unforgivable is that there were multiple video packages shown for superstars not on the show, as well as two mostly useless cruiserweight segments – which includes the rope changes. You couldn’t have found 5-6 more minutes at very least in there?
Because of the condensed time, all of the falls would need to happen quickly. A Brogue Kick to Jeff while upside down on the turnbuckle led to the champs taking a quick 1-0 lead. Not too long after, Matt took a hot tag and evened things up with a Twist of Fate on Cesaro.
In most 2 out of 3 falls matches, the real excitement comes when the score is 1-1. Like commentary pointed out, it’s sudden death. One false step, and the match is over. In other words, it goes back to being a standard match.
The urgency in this one for the final fall was no exception. Well, except for the whole “let’s not get back in the ring” thing that led to the double count out. That wasn’t so urgent. But aside from that, both teams threw everything they had at their opponents. It was quick, exciting, hard-hitting.
So clearly, this rivalry isn’t over yet. It’s not really a bad way to spend a large chunk of time, but if this goes much past Great Balls of Fire (ugh), it’ll start to produce diminishing returns.
