Enzo Amore and Big Cass: Bad Timing Personified

Enzo Amore and Big Cass are no longer a tag team, but where did things go wrong?

Enzo Amore and Big Cass were one of the most popular tag teams in WWE dating back to their days in NXT. The days of seeing the Realest Guys in the Room tagging together are over, as last Monday night on RAW, the two split when Cass admitted to attacking Enzo and followed it up with a big boot.

The two were beloved as a tag team but unlike most as popular as them, one thing was missing: a tag team title reign. Every time they challenged to the titles, whether that be in NXT or on the main roster, it was felt like this time would be the time they finally win the big one. Enzo and Cass were the living, breathing, walking and smack talking personification of bad timing.

First, let’s start with their run in NXT, while they did challenge for the NXT Tag Team Championships a few times against teams like Blake and Murphy and The Revival, they never came away with the gold. In late 2015, it looked like they were on their way to capturing those titles at NXT TakeOver: London.

However, it was not to be. Now, who knows if they lost because Triple H and the NXT writers knew they would get called up after WrestleMania 32, and maybe that had something to do with the decision. Though, as that was happening a new up and coming team was getting over and getting over fast. That team was American Alpha.

We always hear about how things in the wrestling business can change in an instance, and to the credit of American Alpha, they might’ve forced that change. Chad Gable and Jason Jordan getting hot when they did no doubt affected Enzo and Cass. The night that American Alpha won the NXT tag titles, at NXT TakeOver: Dallas, Enzo and Cass weren’t even on the card. With a main roster call-up looming and a brand new hot babyface tag team, the timing just wasn’t right for Enzo and Big Cass.

Now we go to their main roster run. Almost every time Enzo and Cass challenged for the titles it seemed like it was their time. However, two major factors played a part in the title drought. The first one was The New Day and their record breaking title reign. Obviously, if any tag team deserved to have a record breaking title reign it was The New Day. However, that title reign did hamper, not only Enzo and Cass, but the entire tag division.

There was no bigger “This time they’ll win” moment than this past April at WrestleMania 33. It was as close to a certainty as there can be in professional wrestling that the Realest Guys in the Room were going to talk away RAW Tag Team Champions. Then this happened:

Obviously, the Hardy Boyz returning was a great moment and awesome to see. But yet again, the team of Enzo Amore and Big Cass walked away without the titles. There is no one to blame when it comes to these two, it was just being in the right place at the wrong time. With the two now split for the time being, the title brought will continue but the eventual reunion and championship victory down the road will only be that much sweeter.
