WWE Great Balls of Fire 2017: What Happens to Samoa Joe If He Loses?
By Jay Sichler
What will happen to Samoa Joe if he loses at WWE Great Balls of Fire?
Last month at Extreme Rules, Samoa Joe pulled off the biggest win of his career when he defeated Roman Reigns, Finn Balor, Bray Wyatt and Seth Rollins in a Fatal Five Way Match. The win earned Joe a Universal Title match against Brock Lesnar.
Samoa Joe and Brock Lesnar are now scheduled to clash next week at The Great Balls of Fire pay per view. For the last few weeks, Joe has been made it known that he is not afraid of Lesnar at all. Joe choked out Lesnar’s advocate a few weeks ago and this week he made the ultimate statement.
This week on RAW, Joe attacked Lesnar as he was walking down to the ring. Joe was able to lock in the Coquina Clutch on Lesnar. Despite bashing him into the screen on the stage, Joe would not break the hold off Lesnar.
Joe got Lesnar down to his knees and it looked like Joe was going to knock out The Universal Champion. Heading into the Great Balls of Fire event, Joe now has all the momentum and proved that he could possibly beat Lesnar.
Despite all the attacks and the momentum clearly being in Joe’s court, the smart money still has Lesnar defeating Joe at Great Balls of Fire. This would then set the stage for the WrestleMania 31 rematch between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns.
Samoa Joe doesn’t need to win the match as long as he doesn’t seem weak or overmatched. The contest cannot be Lesnar hitting German after German on Joe, and then hit an F-5 for the dominant win.
If Joe can look strong in the match and then lose a close battle to Lesnar it would prove that Joe is a main event talent and can match up with anyone on the main roster. This would give Joe nice momentum and prepare Brock with a solid match heading into Summerslam.
With Lesnar seemed poised to face Roman Reigns at Summerslam, the question arises what will Samoa Joe do at the biggest party of the summer? With Joe now showing he is the dominant force on RAW and can take down anyone, he should set his sights on Braun Strowman at Summerslam.
Strowman has been on an absolute tear this past year and has become one of the most dominant superstars on the RAW roster. Originally viewed as a heel, Strowman has been gaining the approval of the fans during his current feud with Roman Reigns.
It seems like WWE could possibly do a double turn at Great Balls of Fire and turn Strowman into a face and Roman Reigns into a heel. If this happens Strowman would be the perfect opponent to face Joe at Summerslam.
As we have seen Strowman is not afraid of anyone and would no doubt be willing to square off with Joe. With Samoa Joe taking it to Lesnar he has shown that he could match power for power with anyone on the roster.
Strowman and Joe would be a great matchup as it would pit the two of the most powerful men on the roster in a match that could help both stars. The match would give Strowman now a face an opportunity to pull off a big win as a fan favorite and carry some momentum heading into the fall.
Samoa Joe, on the other hand, would remain in another marquee program and could have the chance to show that Strowman is not the most dangerous star on the RAW roster, he is. If Joe would be able to take down Braun, it would give him a ton of momentum heading into the Fall.
Joe vs Strowman would give the fans another exciting match to see at Summerslam. With both men coming potentially coming off huge losses, it would give fans a match that they might not be able to predict.

With both men huge stars and needing a big win at Summerslam, it would make the match feel very important and unpredictable. If Samoa Joe can clash with a popular new rising star in Braun Strowman at Summerslam, his loss at Great Balls of Fire will not be a huge detriment to his career.
