Spitting Fire

Before Raw went on the air, WWE announced that Enzo would have a match against Cass at Great Balls of Fire. Honestly, that could go either way. Scrappy underdog taking on the “next big thing”?

But leaving that aside, holy cow was this fantastic.

Enzo’s promo was one of, if not the, best promos of 2017, bar none. You know how you could easily tell it was great? Count how many times the crowd said “What?” during the whole thing. Here’s a hint – it’s the same number of dimes Enzo always references.

Yes, through the entire promo, the crowd was hanging on every word Enzo said. When he hit the high points, he got real, genuine applause. None of that “OOOOH HE SAID A CATCH PHRASE SO WE SHOULD CHEER NOW” applause, either. It was a real reaction to a very real promo.

Enzo has always been a great talker, much better than his in ring work. When he inevitably becomes more of a nonwrestler, he’s got a built-in role as a manager/advocate/valet/whatever Vince allows him to be called. But this was the best he’s done, possibly because the stakes were higher here than anything the Enzo/Cass team had been involved in. There’s no topping “seven-foot catchphrase that I wrote” – unless “Casshole” did it.

The little segment after the mic drop was a little awkward, like a post credit scene that didn’t really have to be there. But after Cass addressed everything backstage and Enzo came flying in with a WORLDSTAR attack, who cares? This whole thing was awesome.
