John Cena was candid in an interview about his role in WWE and why his time is winding down.
It’s no secret that John Cena’s WWE schedule took a hit since 2015. He missed multiple months with filming season 1 of American Grit, then got hurt, and increased his time in outside media opportunities. This includes season 1 of American Grit, The Wall, hosting award shows, and Saturday Night Live.
Cena stayed with WWE for four months, from January 2017 to WrestleMania 33 in April. He then spent three months away, before returning on July 4 for another stint, one that’s expiration date is unknown.
However, the Leader of the Cenation apparently feels his time in WWE could expire soon. He spoke to Complex on this, and provided interesting remarks:
"“The reason that I wanted to be a free agent and the reason they kind of granted my request is because I don’t know if I’ll be available for Smackdown specific only or Raw specific only, and I also know that my days are numbered. I just turned 40 in April and we have so many young and talented performers, I don’t know how many years I have left. So in the time I have left, I’m gonna do what I can to dedicate to this company I just want to be able to do it the most time that I possibly can.”"
It seems Cena doesn’t know what the future holds for him outside of WWE, so he’s looking to make time when he can whether it’s on Raw or SmackDown Live. That’s usually been around the biggest pay-per-views of the year: Royal Rumble, SummerSlam, and WrestleMania. He didn’t participate at Survivor Series 2016, but took part at October’s No Mercy.
With SummerSlam around the corner, the Face That Runs the Place should be there for it, although he doesn’t have an advertised match yet. First, he’ll face Rusev in a Flag match at WWE Battleground.

Cena’s time in WWE is seemingly coming to an end. Whenever that may be, it will be the end of a historic WWE career.
