WWE SummerSlam 2017: Universal Championship Match Set

The potential main event of WWE SummerSlam has been set.

On last Monday’s episode of Raw, it looked like Brock Lesnar’s SummerSlam opponent would be set. This saw Samoa Joe and Roman Reigns go head-to-head, but it ended when Braun Strowman interfered to cause a disqualification.

To open the July 24 show, Kurt Angle went directly to answering questions about last week’s events (while also mentioning his new “son,” Jason Jordan). It led to Reigns, Joe, and Strowman making their way to the ring to declare their desires for the Universal Championship at SummerSlam.

Instead, after minutes of bickering, the Raw General Manager announced a Fatal Four-Way match for the Universal Championship at SummerSlam. It will be Lesnar vs. Reigns vs. Strowman vs. Joe.

Oh, and we got an opening brawl out of Lesnar’s opponents, too:

This could be the main event of SummerSlam, given the star power of these four competitors. Having it fill the last spot at the show would come over Jinder Mahal and the WWE Championship, a Superstar that’s not at the popularity of arguably any of the four members of this Universal title bout.

For Lesnar, it’s his second Universal Championship defense since WrestleMania 33, where he won the belt. The first saw him defeat Joe at Great Balls of Fire.

Strowman has yet to be part of a PPV title match, so he will add to his early list of career accolades on August 20. His rapid rise could culminate here, with a championship win.

Reigns and Joe are no strangers to the title picture. The former has been involved for nearly three years, while the latter just competed for one at Great Balls of Fire and had two NXT Championship reigns in 2016.
