The WWE SummerSlam card received its fair share of updates on Tuesday night.
With Great Balls of Fire and Battleground out of the way, SummerSlam 2017 is the official focus of WWE programming. It’s one of WWE’s biggest shows of the year and is one of four co-branded events. This means Raw and SmackDown Live will be represented at the show.
On Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown, the SummerSlam match card was updated. Three bouts were officially added throughout the show, two of which for titles.
After AJ Styles defeated Kevin Owens in controversial fashion for the United States Championship, a rematch was granted. This time, it will see Shane McMahon act as the special referee.
Rusev took down Chad Gable on SmackDown Live, and afterward, cut a promo on how he doesn’t have a SummerSlam opponent. Out came Randy Orton, who made the challenge to the Bulgarian Brute for a match on August 20. One Bulgarian rant and RKO later, a new match was created.
Finally, there was the WWE Championship match. In a No. 1 Contenders contest, Shinsuke Nakamura defeated John Cena to earn the opportunity to face Jinder Mahal.
With this in mind, let’s look at how the SummerSlam match card looks, as of Tuesday, August 1:
WWE Universal Championship Match (If Lesnar loses, he leaves WWE)
Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman vs. Samoa Joe
WWE Championship Match
Jinder Mahal (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
WWE United States Championship Match (Shane McMahon is the referee)
AJ Styles (c) vs. Kevin Owens
SmackDown Women’s Championship Match
Naomi (c) vs. Natalya
Raw Women’s Championship Match
Alexa Bliss (c) vs. Bayley
Randy Orton vs. Rusev
The SummerSlam match card quickly built up, with six set for the show. There should be more to come, as both Tag Team Championships, the Intercontinental Championship, and Cruiserweight Championship all aren’t on the show.
There are 19 days to go until SummerSlam takes over the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. What will be added to the show next?
