WWE SmackDown Live Results: Highlights, Analysis, and Grades for August 1
WWE.com
This week’s Smackdown could be the best since the brand split. With matches between AJ Styles and Kevins Owens for the US Title, Chad Gable vs. Rusev, and John Cena vs. Shinsuke Nakamura in the main event for a shot at Jinder Mahal’s WWE Championship on the line at SummerSlam.
Smackdown Live emanated from the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio this week. With three great matches on the card for this week, Smackdown looks to the best since WrestleMania. And the WWE Universe in Cleveland looks psyched to watch them all.
Gable vs. Rusev stole the show and wowed everyone. While Styles and Owens put on yet another great match, and the dream match between John Cena and Shinsuke Nakamura didn’t disappoint either.
There wasn’t a bad part of the show; it was entertaining from start to finish. Let’s just hope that they can keep this kind of story telling up after SummerSlam.
So, without further ado, let,s get into reviewing this week’s Smackdown Live!
WWE United States Championship Match
AJ Styles (c) vs. Kevin Owens
Result: Styles retains via roll-up
Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars
The show opens with the new United States Champion AJ Styles vs. Kevin Owens for the United States Championship. Owens walked down to the ring looking determined to reclaim the gold he had lost the week before.
Owens started the match off strong, grounding the US Champ early. Styles kept trying to quicken the place only to be thwarted by Owens early on. Control went back and forth between the two throughout the match, until Styles was able to hit a flurry of moves capping them all off with a Firemans Carry Neckbreaker.
The official would take a bump after Owens tried to swing at Styles and missed. Owens would hit a super kick on Styles and would then go for the Pop-Up Powerbomb, which Styles would reverse into a roll-up to secure the victory.
Smackdown started off with an okay match. The ending, reminiscent of Battleground, means a rematch between the two is imminent. Hopefully, the next match these two have will show their true potential.
Every match the two have had has felt like they were holding something special back. Watching the match you can tell both men want to hit another gear and take off, but can’t. Whether it’s Vince telling them to hold off, or if time constraints are holding them back, hopefully, at SummerSlam the two will get to showcase their brilliance, and put on the match we all know they can.
