SummerSlam is just around the corner, with many matches to showcase.

SummerSlam 2017 is almost upon us, and it will feature a stacked card, to be sure. WWE had previously announced that the ‘Biggest Party of the Summer’ will be a whopping four hours long, and that’s not even including the pre-show. Like WrestleMania 33 from earlier this year, SummerSlam is going to be a packed event with thirteen matches announced.

While WWE might try to sell every single match as its own ‘main-event-level’ contest, one has to take their hyperbole with a grain of salt. Despite all the hype that exists for these matches, their card placement will be an important factor in SummerSlam’s success.

It goes without saying that any match that takes place early on the card is a ‘curtain-jerker’, i.e. done to hype up the crowd for the rest of the show. As a result, one can expect lower-level title matches and contests involving lesser feuds to take place closer to the beginning. Conversely, the biggest matches will take place closer to the end, with perhaps one ‘buffer’ match put in place so that the audience can calm themselves down before the main event match of the evening.

Pacing and match order plays a big role in determining how the audience will feel throughout a show. Consider the recent Battleground PPV, which was a very poor show in its execution. The first match that aired on the actual PPV, the tag team title match between the Usos and the New Day, was by far the best thing on that card. As a result, the audience was deflated for everything that followed, especially the main event.
