WWE No Mercy 2017 Match Card: John Cena vs. Roman Reigns Set

WWE elected to roll with John Cena vs. Roman Reigns at September’s No Mercy pay-per-view, and not at a future WrestleMania.

On last Monday’s episode of Raw, John Cena and Roman Reigns met face-to-face for the first time in nearly three years on WWE programming. They traded a handful of verbal jabs, before teaming up in the main event to face Samoa Joe and The Miz.

WWE left enough room open for Cena vs. Joe and Reigns vs. Miz, but it opted to go another route. The first-ever Cena vs. Reigns match was announced for No Mercy, the Raw-exclusive pay-per-view that will take place on Sunday, September 24.

Cena vs. Reigns will join Brock Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman for the Universal Championship.

This is a bit of a head-scratcher.

Cena vs. Reigns, while not something that can be proven until it happens, has the ability to headline a WrestleMania event. It’s two of WWE’s most polarizing names of this millennium, something the company has the ability to cash-in on. While this can still happen at a future WrestleMania, having it take place at a “B” show like No Mercy is interesting, to say the least.

Then, it was confirmed Cena vs. Reigns will be the main event of No Mercy. So, Lesnar vs. Strowman will obviously be placed somewhere else on the match card order.

This blockbuster match could always happen at WrestleMania 34 if a title is on the line, or if the first bout is so good (see Cena vs. AJ Styles) that more of it is better. That’s still months away from knowing for sure, however.

Aside from the future speculation, Cena vs. Reigns is a thing for No Mercy, whether it’s too early to happen or not. Did WWE get this right?
