WWE SmackDown: Carmella Breaks Up With James Ellsworth

The moment was a long time coming, but after James Ellsworth nearly costed Carmella her Money in the Bank briefcase on WWE SmackDown, “The Princess of Staten Island” decided to end their “relationship”.

Earlier on WWE SmackDown Live, fans witnessed an explosive altercation between Kevin Owens and Shane McMahon, but they may have been caught even more off-guard by Carmella’s decision to break up with her “manager” James Ellsworth. For weeks, Ellsworth had caused Carmella problems, including when he tipped off her plan to turn on Natalya in a tag team match and cash in on her.

This week on SmackDown Live, Carmella had a match with SmackDown Women’s Champion Natalya and had no intention of cashing in her Money in the Bank briefcase. Ellsworth, however, had other plans, signaling to the ref to start the cash in. Carmella quickly stopped this from happening, but the distraction costed her the match.

As you can see above, Carmella finally decided that it was time to end her relationship with Ellsworth. The fact that it came now was a bit of a surprise, since the storyline could have been dragged out. For as annoying as Ellsworth can be and for as useless as he is as a manager (he costs Carmella more often than he helps her), he did provide some entertainment value. In fact, I’d  argue that he stopped being annoying.

It’s the end of a relationship that had many interesting moments, including when Ellsworth forced a redo of the Money in the Bank match after tastelessly grabbing the briefcase himself (then briefly engaging in verbal jousting with GM Daniel Bryan). There were plenty of other moments, too, such as when Carmella first took Ellsworth shopping to try out new wardrobes, eventually getting him to dress in ridiculous garments to “match” her own ring attire.

The promo from Carmella was scathing, as she basically called him a sad, pathetic excuse of a human before making fun of his genetics, chin, and intellect. It was another example of brilliant acting from Carmella, who once cried on Talking Smack to sell her initial loss of the briefcase after the first official ladder match, and it leaves Ellsworth’s future with the company uncertain. In that promo, Carmella wondered why Ellsworth remains employed, and we’ll see if Shane McMahon or Daniel Bryan decides to address this.
