NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championships: (Champions) EVIL, BUSHI and SANADA vs Kazuchika Okada, Toru Yano and Rocky Romero.
The NEVER Six-Man Championships are the most misunderstood belts in wrestling. Unfairly disregarded by many as the ‘hot-potato’ belts, NJPW’s trio championships provide a central role in the promotion’s faction dynamic.
Take this match for instance. ‘The Rainmaker’ Kazuchika Okada is the general of the CHAOS stable. But rarely, if ever, would have any meaningful interaction with a Junior foot soldier like Rocky Romero. The six-man belts give NJPW’s sizable teams a chance to show real unity. Even the IWGP Heavyweight Champion puts aside his own personal ambitions to strive towards a team objective.
It also makes sense that Okada would want to strip EVIL of his gold, as the ‘Prince Of Darkness’ challenges for Okada’s IWGP Heavyweight Championship in October. Their exchanges were the highlight of this bout, building excitement for their singles clash. SANADA continues to be the master of unorthodox holds, as he wheelbarrowed YTR around the ring, causing him to flop to the mat from dizziness. Rocky almost claimed the upset win with a Sliced Bread on BUSHI.
Ultimately, LIJ retained, proving to be the strongest champions in the Six-Man Championships’ short history. SANADA tied both Yano and Gedo in knots; EVIL hit the STO and stood victorious over Okada; BUSHI planted three Codebreakers on Rocky and covered him for the win. A truly dominant showing from Naito’s troops.
