WWE Rumors: Why Kevin Owens vs. Shane McMahon Is A ‘Falls Count Anywhere’ Match
By Harry Austen
Shane McMahon recently announced that his match against at WWE Hell In A Cell 2017 against Kevin Owens would be a ‘falls count anywhere’ match, leading to lots of speculation (and mostly confusion).
In case you’ve been living under a rock, Shane McMahon is set to face Kevin Owens at WWE Hell In A Cell. And the feud has been awesome. For once, October has come around and we have a feud that actually makes sense to culminate inside the cell.
Some highlights include (obviously) the Owens, Vince head-butt segment — which Kevin Owens seemed to enjoy –, the awesome ‘apology’ promo from The Prizefighter, and even Shane’s triumphant return to SmackDown Live have all been great examples of solid storytelling.
The feud has been on-point. However, one thing that caught me off guard was when they added a new stipulation; ‘falls count anywhere’.
As Ryan Satin from Pro Wrestling Sheet pointed out, the stipulation doesn’t really make sense. From my understanding, the cell’s purpose is to keep the competitors inside, so they can settle their differences and not escape the other ones grasp. However, by adding the stipulation, it’s basically giving away the fact that both mean will be escaping the cage.
Maybe it’s a case where we shouldn’t be mad at the WWE booking? I mean, we all could’ve guessed that both men would escape. Conversely, it’s odd that the WWE would just acknowledge that we all know this, and admit that Owens and Shane would be letting lose outside the confined structure of the cell.
With all the talk of the match being changed to a ‘falls count anywhere’ match, speculation has ensued. And Bryan Alvarez from Wrestling Observer Radio has also added to the speculation. However, he suggested that they’ve added it in for a very specific reason.
"“So, what’s the point of announcing that it’s a Falls Count Anywhere match, except that maybe they were going over various ideas, and Shane decided, ‘You know what? I’m old and I have a family; I really don’t wanna kill myself.’ And so they’re gonna do a pre-tape with a stuntman of something really stupid happening backstage, and they can do the finish there and not risk anybody’s life.”"
It sounds silly at first, but when you actually think about it, it does makes sense. They could pre-film Kevin Owens laying a beating on a Shane McMahon lookalike stuntman, and if done well, we wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.
As far as Alvarez implying that McMahon is old and wouldn’t want to do his own stunt, I disagree entirely. Shane O’Mac is willing to kill himself, one last time, to give the fans a memorable moment and match.

The chances are we’ll probably see one big spot, similar to to McMahon’s match against The Undertaker, and that’ll be it. As far as who’s winning, well, the jury’s out on that one. Some people think Owens, while others think McMahon.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
