WWE: The Shield Reunion Tease Was The Best Promo Of The Week

WWE TLC 2017 will take place in two weeks, and it’s clear that The Shield will be back to deliver their brand of justice at the pay per view.

Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose are three of the biggest stars in the WWE, and Monday Night Raw certainly set themselves up for a big moment when they traded United States Champion Kevin Owens to SmackDown Live for Ambrose, who was the Intercontinental Champion at the time. Having all three of these men set Raw up for a potential reunion of The Shield down-the-line, and it looks like WWE will already pull that card out this month.

Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy set social media and the wrestling world ablaze when they returned at WrestleMania 33 to capture the Raw Tag Team Titles. But Jeff’s shoulder injury will leave the Hardy Boyz out of action as a tag team for several months, and it looks like the WWE have replaced them at TLC this year with The Shield. Another reason for a Shield reunion? Brock Lesnar and John Cena, the company’s two biggest draws, won’t be there for TLC.

The WWE has been building to this moment, and this week’s backstage promo was wonderfully executed. Reigns, Rollins, and Ambrose didn’t have to talk, but they were all in the room together as the camera slowly zoomed out to reveal that Ambrose – and then Rollins – were in the same room as Reigns. They all acknowledged each other, and it’s a reminder of how darn good these three are together; they know how to give us goosebumps without even saying a word.

Ambrose and Rollins have been a tag team since August, and the mending of fences between the two of them has been one of the best stories in the WWE this year. The slow build to that fist-bump, the winning of the Raw Tag Team Titles at SummerSlam, and their recent encounters with Braun Strowman have all been memorable moments in 2017.

Meanwhile, Reigns has been pursuing the Intercontinental Championship, but the real story has been the way The Miz has brutalized Reigns. Miz feels that Reigns is a handpicked, “Chosen One”, and he resents Reigns for that. Last week, he and “The Bar”, who have been feuding with the Shield extensively, brutalized Reigns after a match and mocked the Shield’s signature pose.

We’ll see if the Shield comes out in a full force this Monday night to exact revenge on Miz, Sheamus and Cesaro, or anyone else who has stood in the way of these three. It’s still anyone’s guess as to who they will face at TLC, but Strowman, Miz, Curtis Axel, Bo Dallas, Sheamus, and Cesaro are all wrestlers who could be thrown into the match. Remember, this doesn’t have to be a straight three-on-three match, because the Shield can easily be booked to win despite having a disadvantage in the “numbers game” (as Michael Cole would say).

This segment was a perfect way to help build to the reunion that will lead to a TLC match, and it was enough to top the Velveteen Dream’s “Say my name” promo on Aleister Black as the best of the week.
