4. SmackDown Women’s Championship – Natalya (c) vs Charlotte Flair
Back in May of 2014, Charlotte and Natalya did battle over the vacant NXT Women’s Championship at the first ever NXT TakeOver. On that night at Full Sail University, the duo put on an absolute classic and stole the show on a card featuring names like Sami Zayn, Neville, and Tyson Kidd. In the end it was Charlotte who won that war but it was clear that both women were more than ready to compete with anyone that would eventually come to the roster. Since then, Charlotte has clearly had more success than “The Queen of Harts” but it was at SummerSlam in August that Nattie finally won her second world championship.
That led to this match at HIAC and for the first 13 or so minutes, it looked like the chemistry they shared over three years ago was still very alive. Natalya focused on the challengers leg and was relentless about it. This is by far the best we’ve seen of her in her career and that was apparent in spades Sunday night. Charlotte, to her credit, played the sympathetic, yet tough as nails baby face perfectly as well, soldiering through the damage that the champion caused to her lower left limb. It made her moonsault to the outside look even more impressive.
The only downfall to this match was the ending. It seemed odd to have such a solid match end with Nattie, who had dominated much of the bout, get herself disqualified via steel chair. Maybe that angle can be used to set up another encounter between these two and that would be all well and good, but if the program ends here, it’ll all seem like a bit of a waste. However, good match, great intensity, and a pretty hot crowd. All the makings of a solid pay per view encounter.
