WWE Survivor Series 2017: Lesnar and Styles Steal the Show

WWE Survivor Series 2017 took place from Houston, Texas on Sunday night.  With the battle for supremacy between Raw and SmackDown at a fever pitch, two men made sure to set themselves above the rest.

WWE Survivor Series 2017 has come and gone and as the dust settles we begin the march towards the Royal Rumble.  With a match card that looked more like an all-star game than a wrestling event, one match set itself apart.  In a battle between WWE Champion AJ Styles and Universal Champion Brock Lesnar, both men pulled out all of the stops.  With their respective brands needing the important win, neither champion would back down.

Going into the final weeks before Survivor Series, Lesnar was scheduled to face then WWE Champion, Jinder Mahal.  However, Mahal would lose the title to Styles in Manchester, England just 12 days before Survivor Series.  Fans weren’t excited whatsoever for the Mahal/Lesnar clash and were instantly bought into Styles now being in the match.  AJ Styles is the blueprint for the perfect Brock Lesnar opponent.  He is athletic, can bounce around and make Lesnar look like a monster, but he also has the resume that backs up his being there.

In recent matches, Lesnar has been a bit underwhelming as his bouts don’t usually last too long and are beyond formulaic.  Suplex, suplex, suplex, F-5, 1-2-3 and he’s out of there before the hotel room service closes.  In the obvious David vs. Goliath clash Styles would enter the match the much smaller wrestler.  Just as it was thought Brock was the bully and tossed AJ around the ring like a ragdoll.  At one point Brock would German Suplex AJ completely across the ring.  As the match was going on it started to hit that usual Lesnar match groove, then it didn’t.

Styles shows the Beast why he is the Phenomenal One

Halfway through the match Styles would start to kick into another gear and was mounting some serious offense against Lesnar.  AJ would start to use his quick stick and move offense to get in and out on Lesnar and avoid taking extra damage.  At one point AJ would attempt a Styles Clash, Lesnar countered into an F-5, which AJ countered into a Calf Crusher.  It was seamless and smooth, showing AJ’s ability and a reminder that Brock was a technical wrestler in his early days.  Both men did their absolute best to make sure that they both would leave Houston looking like a million bucks.

Styles would land several of his patented Phenomenal Forearms and stun Lesnar.  Brock has appeared almost human in his recent outings but still unbeatable.  Styles went out there and made the fans believe he could topple the Beast.  One of the big reasons this match was head and shoulders above the rest of the night was its believability.  AJ had Brock in positions to where the Universal Champion looked vulnerable, which not many have done. The look on Brock’s face when locked in the Calf Crusher was of pure agony to where it felt like any second the match could end.

The Beast and the Phenomenal One went into Survivor Series Sunday night and committed a crime, they stole the show.  In what would be Lesnar’s best singles match in recent memory, both men are poised for big things in 2018.  With the Royal Rumble soon on the horizon, Lesnar and Styles look to continue their success.  If their match Sunday night did anything at all, it created a major interest in seeing the two again.
