WWE: Top 5 Biggest Pro Wrestling Moments in Georgia Dome History

1 of 5

Professional wrestling has a long history in the city of Atlanta, Georgia and some of the greatest moments in NWA, WCW, and WWE history have taken place in Atlanta.

The NWA, WCW, and WWE have blazed a trail in Atlanta over the years from places like the Omni Coliseum to the Phillips Arena, and especially the Georgia Dome.  The Georgia Dome was opened in 1992 and lived a long and meaningful life until it was demolished on Nov. 20 after the opening of the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in August to pave the way for future sports entertainment history in Atlanta.

Outside of many important moments from a variety of different sports, the Georgia Dome saw some very memorable moments in sports entertainment history as well.  Several moments that many would claim to be some of pro wrestling’s biggest took place inside the dome from WCW to the WWE.

But what moments are the biggest in sports entertainment’s history at the dome?  Many stand out, but let’s take a look at the five biggest pro wrestling moments in Georgia Dome history.

5. Stone Cold Steve Austin and Triple H Battle Throughout The Dome: WWE Raw October 11, 1999

WWE’s Attitude Era was building and getting bigger as time went on heading into the new millennium, and one way to make Raw feel bigger was have it take place at the Georgia Dome.  With the No Mercy pay-per-view set to take place just six days later, Raw went all out in the dome.

The top feud in the WWE at the time was between Stone Cold Steve Austin and WWE Champion Triple H.  The two were set to meet at No Mercy for the title, but their paths would cross on the Oct. 11 edition of Raw in 1999 after Austin called out The Game at the beginning of the show.

This led to an unusual tag team match of Austin and Jim Ross, who Triple H tried harassing earlier in the night, battling The Game and Chyna.  The match would end in a no contest, but chaos would take place as Triple H and the Texas Rattlesnake would battle all throughout the Georgia Dome.  The battle even picked up at the end of the show after the final match of that particular episode of Raw.

Austin trapped Triple H in a room with a rattlesnake, which led to quite a bit of storyline developments in its own right.  The Game and the Texas Rattlesnake’s feud would go on and off for a solid year and a half after this run, but this was a memorable night in Atlanta.

Austin and Triple H are two of the biggest stars in WWE history, and their paths crossed in a big way inside the Georgia Dome on a mid-October night in 1999.
