Pro: Respect For The Past

Hiroshi Tanahashi is appropriately dubbed New Japan’s John Cena.

During a particularly turbulent time for the company, Tanahashi dutifully took on the role of ‘Ace’, putting the promotion on his back. His dedication to the cause would lay the foundation for the golden age we are witnessing today.

Crucially, Tanahashi remains an integral part of this golden age. Like Cena, Tanahashi has taken a reduced role so that younger talent can make their mark atop the card. Despite stepping out of the Heavyweight Title picture, he remains a reliable top draw that can close out shows defending the Intercontinental Championship.

Keeping Tanahashi as the veteran cornerstone of the current ‘Big 4’ provides fans from the mid-2000s a constant to look to amid all of these exciting, new developments. As Okada, Naito and Omega help expand the company’s influence, Tana remains the champion of the loyal fans who held strong through the dark days. Stepping aside can be only temporary for a competitor like The Ace. When called upon, Tanahashi can easily provide a legitimate challenge for any up-and-comer.
