WWE Chairman Vince McMahon Re-Launching the XFL?

According to a new report, WWE CEO Vince McMahon is relaunching the XFL (‘Xtreme Football League’).

So it looks as if McMahon is stealing one of Cena’s catchphrases and truly not giving up on his American Football dream. For those unaware, the XFL was founded in 1999 and dared to do what many thought was impossible; purposefully add comedy, skits, and fake dramatisation to American Football. The XFL was truly a great representation of Vince himself and the vision he has for entertainment, more specifically, ‘Sports Entertainment’ – which had worked so well for WWE.

The XFL wasn’t just a product of WWE though, it was also a product of NBC. The joint venture between the two companies would eventually turn out to be a disastrous one. All started well for the XFL, with high ratings and, from all accounts, a different experience from the NFL – which people seemed to enjoy.

However, a few abysmal ratings later and the XFL simply wasn’t feasible anymore. In short, WWE and NBC collectively lost $35 million. What remained was a finished pet project for Vince, as well as a hole in his pocket. (For a more in depth look at the XFL, check out ESPN’s 30-for-30. It’s an incredibly honest and insightful look at the birth and demise of the XFL).

After reading that, you’d probably think McMahon would want to stay clear of the XFL, right? Wrong. According to a report from Twitter user Brad Shepard, who initially broke the story, Vince is looking to re-lauch the former NFL competitor. He follows by saying that McMahon may announce some form of news regarding the XFL late next month.

According to another report from the Wrestling Observer (on Wrestling Observer Radio), McMahon is not looking to spend any of WWE’s budget money, but however looking to spend his own fortune (cue Shane O’Mac’s theme song).

WWE recently issued a statement noting that McMahon is launching ‘Alpha Entertainment’, which will be separate from the wrestling juggernaut. Vince will probably be using ‘Alpha’ as a separate entity to re-launch the XFL, most likely because he doesn’t want WWE’s stock price to plummet. If he announced that WWE were re-launching, investors wouldn’t be pleased, hence the different entity.

Bryan Rose from Fightful.com and Deadspin’s David Bixenspan got this response from WWE, regarding the XFL and ‘Alpha Entertainment’:

"Vince McMahon has established and is personally funding a separate entity from WWE, Alpha Entertainment, to explore investment opportunities across the sports and entertainment landscapes, including professional football. Mr. McMahon has nothing further to announce at this time."
