WWE SmackDown Grades: Fastlane Card Taking Shape

The Feb. 20 edition of WWE SmackDown was a solid enough show for the blue brand as the buildup towards the Fastlane pay-per-view heats up.
Last night’s WWE SmackDown saw more matches made for the Fastlane pay-per-view in less than three weeks. The building around the WWE Championship match at the pay-per-view also took some twists last night as well.
Fastlane is shaping up to be a solid show from the blue brand as it represents the final brand-exclusive pay-per-view the WWE will run. With that being said, let’s take a look at a few grades from last night’s WWE SmackDown.
5. Opening Segment
The WWE Championship picture at Fastlane will feature five of the blue brand’s best battling it out for the right to head into WrestleMania 34 as champion. But in the meantime, these superstars have had quite a few encounters and/or matches already.
Last night’s show began with AJ Styles being interviewed in the ring and he delivered a solid promo regarding what to expect at Fastlane with four challengers for his title. He was then interrupted by Baron Corbin, who delivered a solid enough promo in his own right saying how he has Styles’ number.
Another piece of the equation joined the fold when Kevin Owens addressed both Styles and Corbin. He gave a pretty good promo, but it seemed like the entire segment started going downhill a bit at this point. KO was then interrupted by commissioner Shane McMahon who would put Owens in a match against Dolph Ziggler immediately.
Shane also pitted Styles against Corbin in the main event last night. Overall, this segment was pretty good despite its imperfect nature. Not everything was perfect, but there were enough good moments to be considered a good enough start to the show last night. And with nearly three weeks until Fastlane, the promos and matches between the five superstars vying for the WWE Championship should get better.
The opening segments on Tuesday nights tend to drag on sometimes, but last night’s opening segment was a pretty good way to open up the show.
