WWE: Could Rusev Actually Be On His Way Out?

The Bulgarian Brute, Rusev from Rusev Day, may be parting ways with WWE sooner rather than later despite his connection with the fans.

Despite initially being booked as a dominent monster heel in WWE, Rusev has always had an innate charisma about him that has made him likable and easy to cheer for. He was able to show off his comical personality on social media and Total Divas, and eventually it seeped into WWE programming.

However, it wasn’t until last Summer that Rusev really started to get over with fans. After a quick victory over Randy Orton, Rusev and his new partner, Aiden English, declared that day (and everyday) Rusev Day.

From there, things really took off. The duo was booked as heels, but the crowd cheered their hearts out for them in every match. “Rusev Day” chants are abundant at every WWE show, even if Rusev isn’t even performing, and the chant even made its way to Ring of Honor shows.

And it doesn’t stop there. Not only was Rusev winning over the audience, he also rose to the top in merchandise sales in WWE with his “Happy Rusev Day” shirts, mugs, and calendars among other things.

So, you would think the most over guy in the company with the best merch numbers would get a big spotlight in WWE programming, right? Well…that sadly has not been happening.

Rusev and Aiden English failed to pick up momentum in the tag division, and then Rusev lost a United States championship match to Jinder Mahal, and there was seemingly no spot for the Bulgarian Brute on the WrestleMania card.

There were rumors that Rusev asked for his release due to the mistreatment, so WWE bargained with him and offered him a spot in the United States Championship match at WrestleMania (obviously, take any rumors with a grain of salt).

So, instead of the mistreatment ending there, Rusev actually ate the pin at WrestleMania, lost a number one contender’s match the next Tuesday, then got scheduled for a casket match against The Undertaker at The Greatest Royal Rumble event so he he can literally and figuratively get buried.

Rusev went to Twitter to vent his frustration with this tweet:

Shockingly, Rusev was then pulled from this match with no explanation. It was announced by WWE that Chris Jericho would actually be taking Rusev’s place in that casket match.

Since then, Rusev has removed any affiliation with WWE from his social media bios and even unfollowed them. He then went on to tweet:

Rusev is known for trolling his fans on Twitter, so don’t freak out just yet. As of this writing Rusev is still listed as a WWE Superstar. Also, Rusev could just be referring to taking Rusev Day to another brand as a part of the Superstar Shakeup rather than to another promotion.

Also, Rusev could have been remobed from the Undertaker match due to injury, or because it was scheduled to be a squash, WWE found a new opponent in order to avoid burying one of their most popular Superstars.

That being said, if Rusev does decide to leave WWE, it would be hard to blame him. He has been poorly used in his latest Rusev Day run, and WWE has failed to capitalize on his popularity. I’m sure with Rusev’s charisma, in ring skill, and current momentum, Rusev would be a top star on the indie scene if he wanted to leave.

So, WWE can either make Rusev the top star that he deserves to be. Or, WWE can let their most over act slip from their hands and watch him tear it up on the independent scene.

Then again, this could all be a work by WWE’s greatest Twitter troll in an effort to get the WWE Universe behind the Bulgarian even more. And hey, it’s working. I just hope that we get to see many Happy Rusev Days as possible in or outside of WWE.
