5. Chad Gable
During the 2016 WWE draft, Chad Gable, at that point one half of the tag team American Alpha with Jason Jordan, was drafted to SmackDown Live with his partner. Five months later the tandem would go on to win the blue brand’s tag team championship. It was really no surprise that Gable and Jordan became champions so quickly.
They were highly regarded as one of the best, young teams in the company as evidenced by their tremendous NXT run that saw them capture that brands tag team gold as well. But what was a bit surprising was the lack of fanfare that the duo got once on the main roster. With their NXT luster seemingly gone, American Alpha seemed to have no spark, and they dropped the tag titles after less than three months.
Shortly after losing the belts, Gable seemingly went off on his own and although he didn’t have a ton of success in the win column, he showed tremendous promise as a singles star. However, in the Summer of 2017 Gable began teaming with the newly returning Shelton Benjamin. The team had some mild success but what really began to shine through during their time together was the star power of Gable.
He adopted a heel persona and seemed extremely comfortable cutting a promo. Add that to the fact that he continued to evolve into a tremendous in-ring performer and its clear the red brand may just have a budding singles star on their hands.
Once seen as the superstar with less potential in the team with Jordan, Gable suddenly finds himself in a very advantageous position as a singles competitor. Clearly now the more likeable American Alpha member, Gable has a massive opportunity on Monday nights. It may take a little time, but don’t be surprised if you see him wearing Intercontinental gold before the end of 2018.
