Should Roman Reigns Win the Universal Championship at the Greatest Royal Rumble?
By Jack Clayton
With WrestleMania in the past, Roman Reigns is once again in the doghouse.
After losing to Brock Lesnar in the main event for the Universal championship, things are not looking good for the Big Dog, Roman Reigns. Not only has he been known for being poorly booked in the past, but he can’t seem to get the WWE Universe behind him for anything.
And if that wasn’t enough, hours before the Raw after WrestleMania, it was announced that Reigns and Lesnar would be fighting for the title again, this time in a steel cage at the Greatest Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia.
Of course by now, the fans are less than enthusiastic about seeing the Big Dog on top again. After being in four straight WrestleMania main events in a row, fans seem to be quite finished with Roman Reigns in the main event scene.
But despite what they want, Reigns is still in it, and will have the match with Brock. And if there was a place to give him the Universal Championship, it would be at the Greatest Royal Rumble.
Roman has not held a world title in WWE since Money in the Bank 2016, where he lost the WWE Championship to a returning Seth Rollins. Since then, he has been in several world title matches for both the WWE Championship and the Universal Championship.
And one thing that many of Roman’s haters will say is that he does not deserve to be in any of these matches in the first place. And quite frankly, that is farther from the truth.
One thing that many of them tend to forget is just how talented of a worker Roman Reigns is. On a weekly basis, Reigns tends to deliver stellar matches on Raw, and knows how to deliver on the big stage.
Just last year, Roman was only in two matches for the Universal Championship. The first one was at the Royal Rumble against Kevin Owens, with Chris Jericho in a cage above the ring. The second one was at SummerSlam against Samoa Joe, Braun Strowman and Brock Lesnar. Both matches were considered two of the best WWE matches of the year.
While his opponents were all very talented on their own as well, Roman can’t be forgotten in that mix. Especially in the last year, Roman has honed his craft, and has wrestled some of the best matches in his entire career. So to say he shouldn’t win the Universal Championship because he can’t wrestle is null and void at this point.
Now, to be fair, for most of Roman’s world title reigns, the booking hasn’t been the best. He’s had to deal with the League of Nations, the poorly received match against Triple H at WrestleMania 32, and most recently his bout with Lesnar this year.
While the buildup was much better than their first encounter at WrestleMania 31, the match in New Orleans simply did not deliver. Even with a spot featuring Roman being busted open, the fans just couldn’t get into the match. Part of that may be because we have seen this match before, and not many wanted to see it again.
That may also be the reason that there are those who are not looking forward to the steel cage match at the Greatest Royal Rumble. But there is a way to fix this going forward.
Having Roman win the Universal Championship is a perfect way to transition into a feud with a returning Dean Ambrose.

Ambrose was last seen on TV in December, where he was injured. After surgery on his triceps tendon, he was, and still is, on the shelf for months. The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time, as Ambrose was reportedly set to turn heel. From there, he was set to go into WrestleMania against former Shield brother Seth Rollins.
But because of that, plans changed, and Rollins went on to win the Intercontinental Championship. So the logical choice would be to have Amborse return and have his feud with Rollins. But there’s something else they ought to do before having that feud. Because that feud is worthy of a WrestleMania match, and deserves a proper buildup.
So beforehand, WWE should have a feud between Amborse and Reigns, preferably ending at SummerSlam. It would cap off with Ambrose wining the title off Reigns, and carrying it into Mania against Rollins.
This is honestly the best option for Ambrose. Having him turn heel against Reigns will give him a great deal of support. Not only that, but it would actually allow him to be a lunatic without being restrained by being a babyface.
Ambrose and Reigns also know how to put a good match on together. This was made clear by their match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Survivor Series 2015, as well as the triple threat at Battleground between Ambrose Rollins and Reigns. Although Reigns may have won their last bout, this would be Ambroses’ chance to win and shine on the Grand Stage. But it all starts with Roman winning the Universal Championship at the Greatest Royal Rumble.

Roman Reigns is a great performer, there’s no arguing that. He absolutely deserves to hold a world title again. This will more than likely be the Universal Championship at Greatest Royal Rumble, and that’s a good thing. Not only does it allow him to showcase his talents as champion, it builds to other great feuds down the road.
