Loser: Bobby Roode
It’s really hard to figure out what’s going on with Bobby Roode since his promotion to the main roster. Formerly one of the greatest wrestlers in TNA history, “The Glorious One” came to NXT in the Summer of 2016 to a warm reception from the NXT faithful. He would use that acceptance to go on a tremendous run at Full Sail University that saw him capture the NXT Championship and hold it for over 200 days. It was a tremendous way for a guy with Roode’s resume to debut with the company and it all seemed like things would go swimmingly no matter what roster he would eventually end up on.
So when that call up happened last August and Roode debuted on SmackDown, things right away didn’t seem to click. He got involved in a boring, long-winded feud with Dolph Ziggler that just went nowhere. He then went after the U.S. title, involving himself in programs with Baron Corbin, Jinder Mahal, and Randy Orton. All three feuds were about as engaging as his run against Ziggler. The blue brand audience did not appear to be getting behind Roode no matter what he did, so a roster switch to looked to be in the cards.
During the Superstar Shakeup, the WWE did exactly what they should’ve with Roode, and that was to give him a change of scenery. However, just a week later and Roode is getting pinned by Elias on Monday night in what will most likely turn into another flavorless feud. Based on the lack of quality during this RAW match, don’t expect anything else.
The real problem is that Roode needs to be heel. That’s where he’s always done his best stuff. And until the WWE decides to make that change, it’s just going to be more of the boring, repetitive stuff from an immensely talented guy.
