2. Roman Reigns

It wasn’t long ago that Roman Reigns seemed like the obvious choice to become the next Universal Champion.  But now just a few weeks after his WrestleMania 34 loss to Brock Lesnar, The Big Dog is in a precarious position.

Not only did Reigns lose to Lesnar at WrestleMania 34, he also lost a controversial steel cage match to Lesnar at the Greatest Royal Rumble event recently.  And while the angle is he didn’t actually lose that match, he still has yet to capture the Universal Championship and has a big test at Backlash in a long-running rivalry of sorts.

Reigns will battle Samoa Joe this Sunday to renew a rivalry that had a fair amount of success over the past year or so.  The Big Dog’s attention might be on Lesnar still, but a match with The Samoan Submission Machine is nothing to overlook, especially given how Reigns comes in wounded on the heels of two straight disappointments courtesy of The Beast Incarnate.

While Joe is already establishing himself as a top guy on SmackDown, Reigns needs the win here more than Joe does.  Another loss could severely derail Reigns’ chances of ever getting another shot at Lesnar down the line.  But a loss to a Raw superstar that’s the perceived face of the brand wouldn’t hurt Joe, who’s now going to turn his attention on the blue brand’s top stars.

In a battle of two heavyweights looking to settle a rekindled feud, The Big Dog needs to get the win and improve his chances of ever getting another opportunity to win the Universal Championship.
