8: Johnny Gargano (April: #1)

Despite having not wrestled on NXT in May, Johnny Gargano is still involved in the best storyline in the whole of the WWE right now, and he looks set to steal the show once again at Takeover: Chicago when he squares off with Tommaso Ciampa one more time.

Gargano was involved in one of the best segments of the month on the May 23rd episode of the show. Having been sidelined for a few weeks with a kayfabe injury, Gargano teased a retirement in an excellent promo before calling out Tommaso Ciampa and brawling with him in the ring. The segment ended with Gargano being knocked into his wife, Candice LaRae on the entrance ramp, knocking her unconscious.

Even when he is not performing in the ring, Gargano remains as one of the finest performers in NXT.

7: Shayna Baszler (April: #5)

Shayna Baszler and the NXT women’s title have been a match made in heaven so far, and after winning the belt from Ember Moon in New Orleans, she has spent the month of April terrorising poor Dakota Kai.

Baszler’s character work this month has been excellent and she is the most believably terrifying female in all of the WWE. She has competed just once this month, defeating Dakota Kai in a good match on the May 30th episode of the show. After the match, she was attacked by Nikki Cross, setting up a feud between the two, which will end in a match at Takeover: Chicago.
