Roderick Strong Vs Danny Burch

Result: Roderick Strong wins with a back-breaker.

Grade: C+

With NXT Takeover: Chicago just 10 days away, Danny Burch was out to pick up a victory over Roderick Strong, before the two men meet with their respective partners for the tag-team belts.

The match was kept fairly short, but it was a technical, and enjoyable encounter for what it was. Both men are gifted in-ring performers and this was a slight tease of what we can expect from them at Takeover: Chicago.

The match descended into chaos at the end, with The Undisputed Era running to the ring, only to be followed by Lorcan and Pete Dunne. Amid all the chaos, O’Reilly managed to distract Burch, allowing Strong to hit a backbreaker for the victory.

Post-match, Dunne confronts Strong in the ring, but Kyle O’Reilly hits him with the championship belt, and the segment ends with The Undisputed Era standing strong.

This match really just existed for the post-match shenanigans, which were a fun way of continuing the feud as we get ever closer to Takeover: Chicago.

Kassisus Ohno and EC3 Segment

Kassisus Ohno is doing a photo shoot backstage when he is interrupted by EC3.

EC3 asks why they are doing a photo shoot with Ohno, and goes on a rant about being the top 1 percent and the golden goose.

Ohno cuts him off and says why don’t you prove it in the ring. EC3 says he is fully booked and Ohno challenges him to a match next week, which EC3 accepts.

I’ve been saying it for weeks now, but it feels as though there is no need to have EC3 in NXT. His promo work is excellent, and he channelled his inner The Rock throughout this segment. He is a star in the making, and I can’t wait to see what Ohno can get out of him in the ring next week.

Ricochet and Velveteen Dream Video Package

Next, we get an extended video package looking at the feud between Ricochet and Velveteen Dream.

The video chronicles Ricochet’s journey to NXT, and the former NJPW star talks about how The Dream has had no real obstacles to overcome in his career. He mentions The Dream’s past as a reality TV star, which The Dream hilariously responds to by saying he doesn’t remember that.

This was an excellent video package and really sold the match at Takeover. Velveteen Dream is one of the brand’s most entertaining and unique characters, and he continues to shine, and make everybody else around him look great as well.
