Will the Women Outshine the Men at WWE Money in the Bank?

WWE’s women’s division will be well represented at Money in the Bank on Sunday, June 17. Both of the women’s titles will be defended and eight Superstars will compete in a Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match.

While the men are of course represented as well, it’s difficult to believe the Superstars of the women’s division will not be ready to deliver. They have embraced the spotlight from the day the Women’s Revolution began and they continue to break ground in the industry. But what are the chances the women will steal the show at Money in the Bank?

Of the 10 matches booked on June 17, only three belong to the women. But three may be all they need to impress fans and leave them wanting more. No one can deny the men have some big matches ahead. But there’s also some reason for concern regarding each one.

AJ Styles will defend the WWE Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura. It will be a solid match. It will probably be the best of their series thus far. Each man gives everything he has and that will surely be true at Money in the Bank.

But no matter how much the fans love both guys, the truth is this feud has fallen flat. Styles and Nakamura do have great chemistry together. However Nakamura’s antics overshadow that chemistry. No one knows if he will win the WWE title at MITB but even if he does, there is no guarantee it will be a satisfying end to the rivalry.

The Men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match features top stars from both Raw and SmackDown. Kevin Owens, Bobby Roode, Finn Balor and Braun Strowman will represent the red brand. The New Day, Rusev, Samoa Joe and The Miz will represent the blue brand. There’s no reason why this match shouldn’t be a hit. But even though it will surely be exciting to watch, the outcome is perhaps already anticlimactic.

Unless a SmackDown Superstar wins, there just does not seem to be a point to this match. Brock Lesnar is the Universal champion. He’s broken CM Punk’s record title reign of 434 days. No one can touch him and even fewer can hang with him. He is the most dominant beast in the company and there’s just no getting around that.

If a SmackDown talent does go over, then what next? Is Rusev truly ready to wear the top championship in the business? What about The New Day? The Miz is over and if he wins, he could eventually face Daniel Bryan for the title. If that happens, fans would surely leave happy. Of course if Samoa Joe comes in and smashes everyone in sight on his way to pulling down the briefcase, then the entire complexion of SmackDown Live could change. But is that going to happen?

The aforementioned Daniel Bryan will face Big Colin Cassady in a match that very few fans are anticipating. Bobby Lashley and Sami Zayn will square off and virtually no one cares. Even fewer care about Roman Reigns versus Jinder Mahal. The Bludgeon Brothers will face Luke Anderson and Karl Gallows, which should be a solid match. Seth Rollins will put his Intercontinental Championship on the line against Elias in a match that could be the highlight of the men’s card.

All of the men booked at Money in the Bank will undoubtedly give maximum effort. But when it comes to compelling storytelling and must-see matches, the women have the advantage at Money in the Bank. It’s their night to shine and there is enough talent to keep fans hooked through all three matches.

The Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match has more momentum now than it ever had. The June 11 edition of Monday Night Raw added some real fire as a Fatal 4-Way impressed the crowd at the start of the program.

Natalya, Sasha Banks, Alexa Bliss and Ember Moon waged war just days before their ladder match at MITB. They worked hard, they kept the fans into the match and they set the tone for what’s to come on June 17. Unlike their counterparts in the men‘s ladder match, the women do not seem to have any roadblocks to face after winning the Money in the Bank contract. In other words, a female version of Brock Lesnar is not waiting on the other side. Or is there?

Ronda Rousey will face Nia Jax for the Raw Women’s Championship. It’s only Ronda’s second TV match and her first opportunity at championship gold in WWE. Though some fans have been critical of the build to the rivalry thus far, there is no doubt that all eyes will be on this match at MITB.

Rousey is a natural in the ring. Fans could have turned on her in the beginning but they accepted her and she has been in their good graces since then. It’s clear that she enjoys what she’s doing and it’s obvious that she wants her new career in WWE.

Then there’s the second women’s championship match as Carmella defends the SmackDown version against Asuka. This may be the most interesting of the two title bouts, if only because of how it could potentially end. Asuka is the most dominant force in women’s wrestling but her loss to Charlotte at WrestleMania 34 has created doubt among fans when it comes to WWE’s intentions.

However Carmella has never looked better. She worked hard to get her spot and now that she has it, she will not give it up that easily. Some may have viewed her as a transitional champion but that may not be the case. Fans are certainly anxious to see how she will look against The Empress of Tomorrow and Carmella has a great opportunity to prove she’s ready for the main stage.

Money in the Bank should be an entertaining event overall. But even as the men continue to carry the company, it’s obvious that the women are definitely holding their own. It’s a great night for them to show up, show off and steal the show.
