WWE Releases Big Cass After His Best PPV Performance In Singles Career

Although he is coming off of arguably the best performance of his career as a singles competitor, Big Cass has been released by WWE just hours before tonight’s episode of SmackDown Live.

According to an article published on WWE.com this afternoon, WWE has announced the release of William Morrissey, known as Big Cass.

On Sunday at Money in the Bank, Cass was defeated by Daniel Bryan, tapping out to a Heel Hook after putting together the best match of his career as a singles wrestler. Cass was previously Enzo Amore’s tag team partner before turning on Enzo last summer. His singles push went on hold due to an ACL tear, but he returned after this year’s Superstar Shakeup on SmackDown Live, feuding with Bryan (because he apparently hated short people).

Cass’s release comes absolutely out of the blue, and it will be interesting to see if he was disgruntled with the company. It seemed like WWE was high on Cass, as they gave him lengthy promo segments both during the show and on WWE.com exclusives. He clearly made strides in the ring, based on his performance at Money in the Bank, and he’s also been improving his stage presence despite being given poorly-written promos.

However, perhaps Cass got himself into hot water with the company again. Last month, he reportedly had “heat” on him backstage, per Pro Wrestling Sheet’s Ryan Satin, after hitting a local talent with a “Big Boot” and punches. Cass had asked Vince McMahon before the segment if he could do this, and Vince said, “No”. But Cass went ahead and beat down the fake Daniel Bryan, putting himself in hot water for going against the script and Vince’s orders.

I’m sure we’ll hear more information about Cass’s release. His former tag team partner, Enzo Amore, was released months ago after failing to disclose that he was under investigation for an alleged rape. Since then, Enzo has not tried to get back into wrestling and has released a rap song, which is honestly an embarrassment to the genre.

So I wonder what Cass’s next move will be. He was honestly a below-average wrestler and talker who had little going for him despite his height, but Cass did look quite good at Money in the Bank and showed some signs of improvement on the mic this month.

Again, this release qualifies as a surprise, but it isn’t a total shock.
