Seth Rollins Has Earned a Universal Championship Run in WWE

Seth Rollins recently lost the WWE Intercontinental Championship to Dolph Ziggler on Monday Night Raw. The loss came as a surprise to many fans, mostly because of the run Rollins has enjoyed since WrestleMania 34.

The Kingslayer has really never looked better, proving that he belongs among the elite of the industry. He will face Ziggler in a rematch for the IC title but Seth likely has bigger things ahead of him. It’s his reputation that will lead him back to main event glory in WWE.

Rollins is a top guy and he has been for quite some time. His initial heel turn against The Shield brought him into the limelight and he has excelled since then. Though many believed he would never regain his championship form after returning from injury in 2017, Rollins is now back in the mix. That’s mostly due to the work he did as Intercontinental champion.

Seth Rollins managed to take a secondary championship and elevate it to the point that it became the top title on Monday Night Raw. Brock Lesnar and the Universal Championship may not be around, but Seth Rollins and the Intercontinental Championship was.

That was surely a great source of pride for Rollins, who delivered top notch performances every time he defended the belt. He not only became the top titleholder on Raw, he also became arguably the best hand in WWE. Seth was always good. But this Seth was that much better.

So his loss to Ziggler should not be viewed as anything other than a necessary event. It wasn’t necessary because Seth had somehow failed as champion. It was necessary because Seth’s focus must shift to bigger things. That bigger thing happens to weigh 286-pounds and tends not to lose that many pro wrestling matches.

Brock Lesnar is the most dominant Superstar in WWE history. Period. But as dominant as he is, there will come a time when he does lose the Universal Championship. When fans look at the current landscape of Raw and decide who could believably take the reins from Lesnar, Seth’s name must be at the top of the list.

Rollins is not a super heavyweight, but he doesn’t need to be. He’s not a beast bent on destruction but he doesn’t need to be that either. Seth is quick, he’s agile and he’s technically sound in the ring. He has a versatile game that allows him to work a wide variety of opponents and no one is better in clutch situations.

Seth can pull a victory from out of nowhere, which is something that would benefit him against Brock. The two have crossed paths before of course but that was a different time and it was a different Rollins. Seth is in the zone right now. The man known as Crossfit Jesus is not just in phenomenal shape because he wants to look good. He’s in that shape because of the dedication and perseverance he possesses.

Seth Rollins is a beast after all and that separates him from many of his peers in WWE. Yes he is operating in character when he’s on TV. Yes he elevated the IC title thanks in part to good booking. But when fans look into Seth’s eyes, they see heart and determination. They see a guy that just wants it more than anyone else.

Rollins versus Lesnar would be a great draw right now because of the work Seth has done over the past few months. He’s never been hotter and WWE should strike while the time is right. Fans know this and certainly want to see it happen. But there are a few questions that WWE must answer along the way.

What about Braun Strowman? Strowman is the new Mister Money in the Bank, which means he has a guaranteed title shot. He could step up any time he wants, cash in his briefcase and become the new Universal champion. Brock may not be around but the first time he returns for a Paul Heyman promo in the middle of the ring, fans are going to wonder if that’s the night the beast falls.

That notion will follow Lesnar until the moment he drops the championship. Strowman is the uncrowned champ in the eyes of many fans who believe he is the only man that can stand toe-to-toe with Lesnar and get the job done. Of course Strowman has had opportunities at the Universal title and come up short. But Braun has matured and improved since then. Why not give The Monster Among Men the nod over The Beast Incarnate?

But what about Roman Reigns? No matter how much the fans boo him and no matter how many times they dismiss him, he is still the man in WWE. The company surely did not invest all of that money and time in Roman only to sweep him aside because his babyface run fell flat. As long as he’s on the roster and as long as WWE believes in him, Roman Reigns isn’t going anywhere.

How about the rest of the Raw main event roster? Are fans to believe that the red brand’s top tier is strictly going to revolve around Rollins, Strowman and Reigns after Lesnar loses the title? What about Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, Elias and the man who will eventually return to the company, Dean Ambrose? Is the Universal Championship only available for a select few, just as the WWE Championship is? Or should the company try something unexpected and take the Raw title in a different direction?

The fact is that the Universal Championship has no luster and Seth Rollins is the man that could properly shine it up. He has worked harder than many and better than most. If title belts are to be handed out based upon ability, then Seth is the right choice. If title belts are to be handed out based upon who deserves it more, then Seth is also the right choice.

Giving Seth Rollins the spotlight as WWE Universal champion is a move that just makes sense. While there’s no way to know what the company has planned, many fans have already decided what the ideal route is. Seth Rollins is not only the best on Monday Night Raw, he is arguably the best in WWE. He could also become the best top champion in WWE as well.
