Dean Ambrose Needs To Be A Lunatic, Not A Heel

Since exploding onto the scene at WWE, Dean Ambrose has been labeled “The Lunatic Fringe”. Yet, Dean Ambrose has not done enough crazy to live up to that nickname. WWE needs to let Ambrose be more loose upon his return.

The Shield is the most successful faction in the last decade. A big reason for that is because Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose are adaptable and have chemistry. The hounds of justice will take down anyone that stands in their way.  Individually the three have more than proved themselves as main eventers. All three men are grand slam champions.

Since the stable has split up it always feels like Ambrose is a slight notch below his former Shield brothers. Dean Ambrose is casted as a lunatic but acts like goofy man. Roman Reigns is consistently the main attraction for Monday Night Raw. The Big Dog has main evented four consecutive WrestleMainias. Seth Rollins was the first of the three to win a world championship.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Ambrose has  been out with a tricep injury since December. This injury is set to keep him out of action for 9 months. In pro wrestling injuries come with the territory but gives superstars a chance to hit the reset button. Also fans will miss him and pop that much louder when Ambrose returns.

Ambrose is very accomplished as a performer. However, his character needs the volume turned up. The popular belief is that Ambrose needs a heel turn to reach his max potential. WhatAmbrose really needs is actually act crazy. Things like making dry jokes and attacking people with a hotdog cart is not cutting it.

Think about the most immortal crazy characters in pro wrestling history. They did not goof around too much like Ambrose. The rugged hardcore legend Terry Funk would do whatever it takes to cause pain. Mankind was a man who talked and walked crazy. Hell, he would even pull out his own hair from his head. Let us not forget he once threw fire at Undertaker.

Then there is the late, great Brian Pillman.

Pillman pulled a gun out on Steve Austin during a segment. This not the attitude era but Dean Ambrose can turn up the volume in other ways. it is up to creative to work within PG parameters and tow the line. For example, from here on out there should be no allegiances. Ambrose needs to be a stone cold loner. Which means nobody is ever safe. In addition, Ambrose needs a weapon of choice.

The barbed wire bat was Mick Foley’s weapon. Sting’s was the black baseball bat. Sandman’s weapon was the kendo stick. These weapons enhanced these personas. Give Ambrose a signature chain or crowbar. That would build suspense for when the weapon is finally doing damage.  Regular use of the weapon is not needed. The Ambrose Asylum match must be established as dangerous like hell in a cell.  Historically audiences love to live vicariously through a defiant warrior.  Fans would pop hysterically at this new dimension to Ambrose.

Dean Ambrose is capable of being one of the real hardcore legends of this era. WWE just needs to present him as a bad dude that nobody wants to mess with.
