The post-Extreme Rules edition of WWE Raw had its fair share of ups and downs, but there were several important moments that should greatly affect the red brand heading towards SummerSlam.

The July 16 edition of WWE Raw was focused majorly around Brock Lesnar and the Universal Championship as his new number one contender has been narrowed down to two superstars.

There were other important storyline developments as well with SummerSlam on deck next month.  With that being said, let’s take a look at five key takeaways from the July 16 edition of WWE Raw.

5. A Dolph Ziggler vs. Bobby Roode Feud Would Set The Intercontinental Championship Back

A championship that has seen a pretty big resurgence in recent memory has been the Intercontinental Championship.  For years, it was considered the second biggest championship in the WWE, but it had lost a lot of its luster until guys like The Miz helped bring it back.

Seth Rollins was continuing the Intercontinental Championship’s upward spiral until he lost the title to Dolph Ziggler a few weeks ago on Raw.  And this past Sunday night’s Extreme Rules pay-per-view saw Ziggler retain his title by the skin of his teeth in an Iron Man match thanks in large part because of his friend Drew McIntyre.

Last night saw Ziggler basking in his glory until The Glorious One made his presence felt.  Bobby Roode came out and wanted a title match with Ziggler immediately, but while Ziggler did give Roode a match, it wasn’t for the Intercontinental Championship.  After a good match, The Showoff got a hard-fought win over Roode.  This begs the question, will Ziggler vs. Roode be the next Intercontinental Championship feud?

That would not be the best way to go about it.  Roode has next to no traction on Monday nights and considering we’ve already seen Roode and Ziggler in a United States Championship feud earlier this year, this seems like a bad idea.  The Intercontinental Championship main evented a pay-per-view for the first time in 17 years just two nights ago, but seeing a recycled feud featuring two superstars we’ve already seen feud before just doesn’t quite cut it.

The title has grown into the most prestigious title on the red brand, but a feud featuring Ziggler and Roode, if the WWE goes in that direction, could set the title back down a couple steps.
