Roman Reigns has yet to win the Universal Championship. Will SummerSlam be different? Photo Source: WWE.com
Everyone says Roman Reigns gets handed championship matches like they’re going out of style. But he usually delivers in the ring. Which of his six Universal Championship matches is the best?
Take a look at the WWE record books, and you’ll see that Roman Reigns is pretty dang good. Former WWE Champion, Intercontinental Champion, United States Champion, and Tag Team Champion. Royal Rumble winner. Hell, he’s even a former FCW Tag Team Champion with Tyler Breeze, if you can believe it.
It would be a massive understatement to say that fan opinion of Reigns is divided. There’s a very vocal section of the WWE Universe who loathes Roman Reigns with a vitriol usually reserved for despots and ex-lovers. They’ve increasingly been drowned out by that part of the fan base who appreciates the in-ring work of The Big Dog, leading to conspiracy theories that Vince McMahon is paying fans to cheer Reigns.
No matter what’s going on behind the scenes, Reigns continues to thrive in the ring. As such, he’s a perennial main event talent, earning (or not, depending on your point of view) multiple shots at championships. But one thing Reigns has never done? Win the Universal Championship.
At SummerSlam, Roman Reigns will face Brock Lesnar one on one for the Universal Championship. It will be the third such match between the two in 2018. It’s also the seventh televised chance Reigns has had at Raw‘s top title since the championship was introduced in 2016.
There’s a decent chance that SummerSlam will finally be the day Roman defeats Lesnar and brings the Universal Championship to Raw every week. So now seems as good a time as any to go back in time and rank each one of Reigns’s Universal Championship matches to date. We’ll start with number six, and work our way to the best of the bunch.
