Chris Jericho Hits Twitter, Fuels Speculation About Future
Chris Jericho is a legend of the wrestling business, and there is no debate. Between his current reign with the IWGP Intercontinental Championship, the Rock N Wrestling Rager cruise, and some new, cryptic tweets, what is next for perhaps wrestling’s greatest innovator?
At the age of 47, Chris Jericho is still making waves across the wrestling landscape. Not only is he a major draw for the biggest professional wrestling company on the planet, but he is now fully involved with the expansion of the second-biggest wrestling company on the planet.
Along with this, he has made appearances on the Bullet Club’s Being the Elite YouTube series, had a killer match with Kenny Omega at Wrestle Kingdom 12, and has planned his very own weekend cruise of wrestling and rock and roll. But it looks like the Man of 1,004 Holds isn’t done just yet.
Early Wednesday afternoon, Jericho took to Twitter to post this oddly cryptic message:
Immediately, fans were abuzz with what this could mean. Perhaps Jericho is finally breaking his vow of only wrestling for WWE while in America? Perhaps his focus will become New Japan Pro Wrestling, or maybe another company, either inside or outside of Japan. What does this all mean?
Well, truthfully, it means that Chris Jericho, the man who has reinvented himself so many times before, is finally getting all the freedom he could ever ask for.
For the past few years, Jericho has kept himself fresh and cutting-edge, while still staying nostalgic. When “Break Down the Walls” (or “Judas,” in NJPW) hits the arena, fans across the world lose their minds. They know they’re getting Chris Jericho, and therefore, they know they’re getting quality work both in the ring and on the mic.
If Jericho truly does plan to go into free agency for 2019 and beyond, he has to be licking his chops with all the possibilities he could have outside of WWE. Jericho, the current IWGP Intercontinental Champion, had a brutal title match with Tetsuya Naito at NJPW’s Dominion show, and as mentioned before, shared an instant classic with Kenny Omega during Wrestle Kingdom 12.
All this New Japan Pro Wrestling talk is fine and good, but what if the latest rumors are true? Could Chris Jericho really be headed to Impact Wrestling?
Well, it makes a lot of sense, if Jericho did decide to partner up with Impact. While not in Winnipeg, Impact television tapings are now based out of Canada. Jericho would get to stay closer to home, rather than having to travel the USA and beyond with the WWE. Not only that, but Impact once again has built a bit of a talent-sharing relationship with NJPW.
Recently, Taiji Ishimori competed in the opening fatal four way match at Slammiversary XVI last month. The writing is on the wall for Jericho to actually make his way back up north to Impact, considering he would move the ratings needle for them in a major way.
But, alas, it may be best for fans to not believe until they see with Jericho. The Lionheart has a bit of a reputation for being a trickster on social media, and this could just be another elaborate ploy to raise some eyebrows. But, if Jericho really is making a move to NJPW, Impact, or any other company, wrestling fans the world over are certainly in for a treat.
