The latest episode of WWE SmackDown sent the blue brand into SummerSlam this coming Sunday with some key momentum involving the brand’s top angles and storylines.
The SummerSlam go-home edition of WWE SmackDown was a solid show from basically top to bottom with some standout promos and in-ring work heading into the biggest party of the summer on Sunday.
Several of the biggest matches at SummerSlam come courtesy of the blue brand and it will be intriguing to see how they play out. With that being said, let’s take a look at a few grades from the Aug. 14 edition of WWE SmackDown.
5. Opening Segment
The SmackDown Women’s Championship has been held by all three participants in the Triple Threat Match at SummerSlam with the title on the line. However, this match feels much different than what one might have imagined it would feel like in the past.
Carmella has developed into one of the best heels in the women’s division in the WWE and has been champion since April, but the reemergence of former champion Becky Lynch has shaken things up. Things became even more shook up when Charlotte Flair knocked off Carmella a couple weeks ago to earn a spot in the match at SummerSlam as well.
Despite being opponents at SummerSlam, Lynch and Charlotte are still friends and are on the same page leading into the event. All three women in the match opened up last night’s show by voicing their thoughts and opinions just days before the biggest party of the summer. Carmella was in her typical heel persona tremendously, but a comment by Charlotte particularly stood out.
Charlotte said Carmella is “a diva living in a women’s era” in the WWE. Carmella agreed, but in a way that said she was better than both Charlotte and Lynch. This eventually led to a tag team match immediately after, but this was a pretty solid segment as a whole. There were a few standout moments from it and everyone had solid character moments heading into SummerSlam on Sunday.
The Princess Of Staten Island, The Irish Lass Kicker, and The Queen will fight it out on Sunday in a match that has gotten personal to a degree, which was evident last night.
Final Grade: B
