WWE: Can Mixed Tag Team Championships Work?
By David Joseph
Mixed Tag Team Matches have always been featured on WWE programming periodically. However, this year WWE has dived deeper into intergender tag team matches. One has to wonder if implementing mixed tag team championships should be considered.
First off, there is a popular belief that there are “too many” championships. To the contrary there is nothing wrong with an extra championship if there is a chance for a unique, thriving division. At one point in time the Hardcore Championship was successful because it was different. The 24/7 rule and extreme matches added a new element to shows. It gave some lower card talents opportunities that they would not normally have. WWE has a chance to find roles for some of their talents by creating a mixed tag team championship.
In order for this to work, the pairings would have to make story sense. Moreover, WWE would have to stay away from the cliché temptation of making every team a romantic one. Men and women can have strictly business relationships for a common goal without romance. It would be wise to keep the love angles amongst the real life couples like Jimmy Uso and Naomi. Manufacturing a fake relationship like Alicia Fox and Seth Rollins would ruin the division before it can begin.
There are a variety of possible teams that could potentially work in a setting like this. Apollo Crews is severely underutilized on the main roster. Since he and Dana Brooke already have a working relationship through Titus Worldwide, why not branch them off to chase inaugural mixed tag team championships? A powerful MMA and amateur wrestling connection can be formed by pairing Sonya Deville with Shelton Benjamin. Bianca Belair and Bobby Lashley would be a team of athletic powerhouses.
Then you have Rusev and Lana, and their rivals Almas and Zelina Vega would also fit perfectly. The absent Mike and Maria Kanellis can be in the mix. In fact they could make great number one heels for this brand, if it were to be spun off into its own show on the WWE Network. There are many talents that can have something meaningful to chase.
The star power can be added by having the occasional part-time team like Brie Bella and Daniel Bryan, or The Miz and Maryse. Even a Stephanie McMahon and Triple H appearance would be compelling. This show can be a way of showing the power of male and female superstars working together.
And, with more and more intergender-type spots on WWE programming, this can be the only show in the company where the males can pin the females and vice versa. This concept make for more unpredictable finishes.
There can never be too much content for WWE Network. A mixed tag division would add to the already loaded amount of content of the streaming service. The WWE Universe would get to see fresh duos that get to flourish on a much-needed platform. Think of it like an updated and supersized Mixed Match Classic, without the nonsense of being Facebook-exclusive.
