The Aug. 28 edition of WWE SmackDown was an important show for the blue brand in the buildup towards the Hell In A Cell pay-per-view in less than three weeks.
Last night’s edition of WWE SmackDown saw quite a bit of impressive storytelling and in-ring action at the same time, even if the in-ring action was a bit more limited than it had been in recent weeks.
With Hell In A Cell less than three weeks away, the blue brand is trending in the right direction at the perfect time. Let’s take a look at a few grades from the Aug. 28 edition of WWE SmackDown.
5. Opening Segment
The New Day has been establishing itself as one of the greatest tag teams in the WWE in not only recent memory, but of all-time as well. The charismatic trio of Kofi Kingston, Big E, and Xavier Woods wrote another chapter in their already historic resume last week when they knocked off The Bludgeon Brothers to win the SmackDown Tag Team Championship.
Last night was all about celebrating their victory to open up the show as they are now five-time tag team champions. One certain superstar knows all about being a five-time champion and that certain superstar came out to honor The New Day like only he could, that being Booker T. But it was the royal King Booker that made an appearance as it turned out.
Booker congratulated The New Day on joining the five-time champions club and would even give Kingston and Woods royal nicknames, but he left out Big E much to his chagrin. After that little misunderstanding cleared, The New Day was officially in the good graces of King Booker as the four celebrated in typical Booker T fashion, with a spinarooni.
This was a very enjoyable segment that was unexpected at the same time given that we haven’t seen the King Booker gimmick in a long time. Everyone blended together nicely and it was a pleasant sight to see all four colorful individuals involved in one segment. And of course, the Byron Saxton diss was pretty much the highlight of the entire segment.
King Booker graced the WWE universe with his presence and The New Day has joined an elite club of five-time champions, what a start to last night’s show.
Final Grade: A-
