It’s the main roster feud I’d never thought I’d see, but now that The Shield is back and better than ever and Sanity is disappointingly underutilized on SmackDown Live, it’s time for these two teams to meet under the big cage and for REAL chaos to ensue.
If you’re anything like me, you were half-looking-forward-to, half-dreading the main-roster call-up of former NXT Tag Team Champions Sanity, because while their anarchic and frenzied gimmick was a hit in NXT, there was a very strong chance it could falter on the main-roster if it wasn’t handled carefully. As we’ve seen thus far, that’s proven true, and a faction we’d wanted to see soar of SmackDown Live has effectively face-planted.
However, next door on the Raw roster, a reunion of epic proportions has ensued, and fan-favorites The Shield have seemingly gone in 100% on a reunion, black vests and all. Audiences loved everything about them, and as proven on Raw this week, they’re not afraid to cause a little too much trouble for the WWE roster.
So how could WWE potentially cash on Shield’s unstoppable momentum while simultaneously reviving Sanity’s? Well, have them smash head on right into each other, that’s how!
Firstly, I’d like to say this – obviously these two factions are currently on two different brands, but I’d like to make a case here that WWE should make Sanity an exception to seemingly everyone but John Cena and The Undertaker, and they should have Sanity be free-agents. It fits their character so perfectly that quite frankly to keep them stuck on one brand is a disservice to it’s members.
There is so much potential for them to regain the chaotic reputation we loved them for in NXT if you let them bop around from brand to brand, showing up whenever they want, and having them attack anyone and everyone they want.
Over on the red side, Shield has to continue to running amuck so that the audience really feels like the good ole’ days are here again. I’m talking about coming to the ring through the arena, popping up from under the ring to attack people, the whole nine.
Then, finally, when Shield has asserted themselves as top dogs once again, it starts quickly. There’s no rhyme or reason for me to believe that there would be any subtle buildup to this feud, as there isn’t one person out of the six I wouldn’t consider ruthless.
This match-up’s power lies in how limitless it is, because as it’s been proven, the more both factions get away with, the more fearsome (and more popular) they become.
It’s likely to be harder for WWE to want to book this feud because of two big reasons currently around the waists of Shield’s Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. You’re not going to want to book Shield and Sanity in a long term feud when you have two championship bookings to tend to also.
That said, I think it could still be done without having either Reigns or Rollins drop their championships. I imagine having Sanity interrupt either Rollins’ or Reign’s championship matches would prove effective, but sparingly so. Sanity could interrupt just enough for Shield to constantly be looking over their shoulders, just enough that they’re in Shield’s three heads. If Rollins, Reigns, or both lose their championships on account of Sanity, you can bet real, real chaos would ensue.
This last part would be a stretch, but I would go as far to say that Shield vs. Sanity would make a very exciting bid for the first War Games match on the main roster. Both factions have a long history of unrelenting violence that could light up a WWE ring, but would preferably be settled in two. It’s the most viable way I can see WWE further implementing the War Games trend from NXT to the main-roster.
