Daily She-DT: Alexa Bliss Remains Hilarious, Jazz’s NWA Title Defense Looks Hype
Today’s She-DT looks at WWE’s build towards Evolution, Jazz’s upcoming NWA Women’s Championship defense, and Ruby Riott vs. Ronda Rousey on Raw.
Let’s start with the WWE Evolution Pay Per View, which takes place on Oct. 28 in Long Island, New York. Frustratingly, WWE has spent more time building towards “cRoWn JeWeL” and this week’s Super Show-Down show than Evolution, which is the far more unique and compelling show. As wonderful as it is for WWE to help Saudi Arabia spread propaganda or sell out a large show in Australia, Evolution is supposed to be a ground-breaking show for WWE.
On the one hand, it’s refreshing for WWE not to cheapen Evolution by incessantly branding the revolution it created because of its past problems with portraying women. On the other hand, why can’t WWE tell some stories and build more feuds for the show? Why does Mickie James vs. Lita have to just be announced on social media? Why can’t we get some indication of what Sasha Banks, Bayley, Nia Jax, or Ember Moon will be doing on Oct. 28? What are the other legends up to?
The whole point of Evolution is to showcase the women’s roster, and that should include showcasing them on Raw during the month of October as we head into the show itself. Unfortunately, it’s looking more and more like WWE used Evolution as a marketing ploy, instead of a chance at meaningful progression. The belief that they timed Evolution closely with “cRoWn JeWeL” to help divert attention is starting to gain more credence.
Alexa Bliss Shines Again In Moment Of Bliss
That said, WWE did build their biggest announced match for Evolution thus far, as Alexa Bliss entertained fans with another brilliant Moment of Bliss. This was another excellent segment from Bliss, who knows how to hype up an impending ass-kicking better than anyone. Bliss, of course, should defeat Trish Stratus, whom she roasted in this segment by recalling an “incident” from her childhood in which Stratus snubbed her. Autograph books don’t pay for Jimmy Choos!
Bliss vs. Stratus had some build, and in some round-about way, Nikki Bella staying in Ronda Rousey’s corner for Rousey’s match against Ruby Riott may have helped build to Evolution, too. Since, well, Nikki vs. Ronda is a possible Raw Women’s Championship match at Evolution.
WWE hasn’t completely neglected Evolution by any means, but they haven’t exactly done enough to hype up this show. That’s a shame, too, because the collection of names should be incredible. It would be nice for those stars to get some more spotlight to help sell this show.
As fans, we should continue to speculate about matches, watch the women’s segments, and tweet about them on social media to show WWE that we remain invested in Evolution despite their “efforts” to disengage us and direct our attention towards their “other” Network specials.
Oh, and bopping to Lzzy Hale’s Evolution soundtrack on Spotify is a highly recommended way of getting excited.
Jazz Defends The NWA World Women’s Championship
Jazz has been the NWA World Women’s Champion for 746 days and counting, meaning that her lone reign as champ has made her the fifth-longest reigning combined NWA World Women’s Champ since the title’s inception in 1935.
There’s a lot of history behind that championship, and Jazz will add to it on Oct. 21 at NWA 70 in Nashville. Watch the hype video above to see what Jazz is all about and get spider bite-sized goosebumps. Seriously. This is one of the best videos I’ve seen to hype up a champion, and, yes, Jazz is forever THE “baddest b**ch”!
NWA is so good at using video clips on social channels to get fans excited for their title matches, and Jazz nailed it here. What a legend.
Later this week, NWA will announce her opponent, and, as Jazz said, this challenger had better have their s**t together!
Note that Jazz will be at Women Wrestling Revolution’s “WWR vs. The World” show on Oct. 28, too.
Ruby Riott Continues To Shine
I just cannot praise Ruby Riott enough for how consistent she is on a weekly basis, and it’s been a joy to watch her blossom into a weekly staple on Raw. We’re at a point where it would be a cause for concern if the Riott Squad weren’t out there, and their fearless leader always finds a way to entertain the crowd.
Confident in her promos and among the crispest in the ring, Riott went from being “Good” in NXT to being “Great” on the main roster. She looks so comfortable as a villain, and I thoroughly enjoyed her match with Ronda Rousey last night, even though it was short. They left plenty in the tank despite teasing some big moments, meaning that they could conceivably have a lights-out Raw Women’s Championship match in the near future. I could see Rousey opening even more eyes with a match against Riott, who would be her best PPV opponent to date.
Until then, we can enjoy Rousey selling Ruby’s dastardly offense, which included a hold that jammed the back of Rousey’s neck against the ropes and a fish-hook. Rousey would get her revenge, quickly submitting Riott after hitting her Samoan Drop. That quick submission loss gives Riott more time to fight and strategize against the Armbar against her next match with Rousey.
I thoroughly enjoyed the selling from both of these women, and I’ll also pretend that Rousey was selling when she initially struggled to hit Riott with a gutwrench powerbomb.
Quick Hits
- Renee Young as the Raw GM would be lit. I mean, she’d be a massive upgrade over Acting GM Baron Corbin, correct?
- Tenille Dashwood’s shoulder injury will prevent her from competing in a highly-anticipated match against LuFisto at WWR vs. The World. The promotion will announce Tenille’s replacement, and LuFisto wished Dashwood a speedy recovery. When this match between them does happen, it’ll be “fire”. I can tell you that much.
- Daniel Bryan’s comments on accidents in pro wrestling are worth reading. Not only did he defend his wife Brie Bella, but it was also interesting to see that he admitted to accidentally kicking Andrade “Cien” Almas in the face recently on his “YES!” Kicks. I never noticed that, and it goes to show you just how small the margin for error in wrestling is. Some errors end up in injuries, and that’s always unfortunate. I have no comments to make on the Brie Bella/Liv Morgan injury incident, other than I’ll defer to what actual pro wrestlers think. So Bryan’s comments are absolutely worth taking into consideration. Sean Waltman’s comments on how this could be a learning experience for WWE are also worth a look (link to Waltman’s podcast).
