The Oct. 2 edition of WWE SmackDown was the final chance for the blue brand to showcase itself before this Saturday’s Super Show-Down event from Australia.

Last night’s WWE SmackDown did a solid enough job of building momentum heading into this Saturday’s huge event with storyline building and in-ring work.

Not everything was perfect, but it was a step in the right direction overall with several of the brand’s top storylines set to take place in less than a week.  With that being said, let’s take a look at a few grades from the Oct. 2 edition of WWE SmackDown.

5. Opening Segment

AJ Styles and Samoa Joe have been tearing the house down over the past couple months in their feud for the WWE Championship.  They have had two very good pay-per-view matches and some outstanding weekly segments on SmackDown, but nothing was quite like last week’s.

In one of the most intense and shocking segments WWE TV has seen in a long time, Joe went to Styles’ house while Styles was at SmackDown.  It was very Attitude Era-like and it turned this feud upside down for the better.  Last night kicked off with focus on Joe’s actions when GM Paige addressed the situation.

Paige said the proper course of action would be to fire Joe after his actions and she said there were charges filed against him.  However, she said after she talked to Styles, he said he wasn’t going to press charges and he doesn’t want Joe fired.  The Phenomenal One wants to end it with Joe once and for all at Super Show-Down, and he said as much last night via satellite.

Styles wasn’t on SmackDown last night, but was rather at his home with his family after last week.  He gave a passionate and intense promo regarding Joe and said how much mental damage Joe did to Styles’ daughter.  The WWE Champion ended it by saying he is going to bury Joe alive at Super Show-Down, figuratively speaking.  Overall, this was a stellar segment and Styles’ part was very good as it showed his wrestler side and family side.

It could have used an appearance by Joe, but this was a solid way to open up last night’s show and send this feud into Super Show-Down.

Final Grade: B+
