Mickie James Has An Awesome Idea About Women Winning Men’s Titles

Mickie James is a true legend of the squared circle as a five-time Women’s Champion in WWE, a former Divas Champion, and a former three-time Knockouts Champion in TNA. As such, she has some great ideas, including a fun one about a woman potentially winning a men’s title again.

Intergender wrestling in WWE has made something of a comeback in 2018, because while we haven’t seen a match between a man and a woman (and it’s possible we never will), we’ve seen a bevy of excellent mixed tag matches.

Ronda Rousey’s WWE debut at WrestleMania 34 was a mixed tag match where she teamed up with Kurt Angle to defeat Stephanie McMahon and Triple H. Some of SmackDown Live’s most captivating segments involve the tag teams of The Miz and Maryse, Brie Bella and Daniel Bryan, Zelina Vega and Andrade “Cien” Almas, R-Truth and Carmella, and Rusev and Lana.

In a recent interview with The Hype Magazine’s Landon Buford, Mickie James said she “would really love” to win a men’s championship, reasoning that it would catch the audience off-guard and lead to some incredible story-telling.

"“I remember when Trish Stratus won the Hardcore Championship. I would really love to win one of the men’s championships and throw a complete curve ball like out of nowhere. When they had the clause that anyone could challenge the champion anywhere as long as there was a referee present. In today’s climate, the man can’t really put his hands on a woman, but it would be a different dynamic. I think it will certainly happen at some point that one of the women will win. I hope it’s me, but I think that one of the women will end up winning one of the men’s championships at some point. I think that would be a great storyline it’s unique, and it would also be a cool story of how a guy is going to get this championship back from a woman.”"

I’d love to see James win something like a “Hardcore” Championship, or even a current men’s title like the Intercontinental Championship to send everyone into a frenzy. I remember how awesome it was to see Chyna and Chris Jericho feud over the Intercontinental Championship back in the day, and James could do something cool like that as a babyface (though she is currently a heel and part of Alexa Bliss’s entourage).

It’s an exciting idea worth thinking about, because there are several women in WWE who could be great Intercontinental or United States Champions (I doubt WWE would do something like this with their world titles). Nia Jax, Alexa Bliss, Asuka, and Carmella come to mind as completely different types of competitors who could do well in this role, in addition to James, whose experience in wrestling would allow her to pull something like this off flawlessly.

This sounds like a cool idea to me, and I love it when WWE Superstars speak about some of the intriguing concepts they have. Many of them could work, and it’s easy to forget that the best ideas have come from wrestlers themselves. The Money in the Bank briefcase has been a staple of WWE’s product for years, and it was largely conceived from the genius of Y2J.

WWE has put it’s “men’s” titles on women before, but there is nothing that specifically states that the IC Title or the US Title is only for men to hold. Women have held other championships in WWE before, as Mickie James noted with Trish Stratus and the Hardcore Championship. It would be awesome to see that happen again, and it feels like we’re at a point in time in wrestling where it should happen again. And since James “said it first”, she gets dibs, right?

I’d encourage fans to follow this link to read Landon Buford’s full interview with Mickie James, because it’s well-done, thorough, and contains several other great responses. James mentions who she’d love to tag with if the Women’s Tag Team Championships return.
