Naomi Says WWE Women’s Division Needs Another Title
At WWE Evolution, Naomi will compete in the Evolution Battle Royal, making her one of 21 competitors to vie for an opportunity at either the Raw or SmackDown Women’s Championships. But Naomi also has her eyes on possible Women’s Tag Team Championships, especially since she’s found the perfect partner in Asuka.
Naomi has always shined in tag team matches on SmackDown Live, as she has one of the most underrated and exciting hot tags on the entire show. Her chemistry with Asuka has blossomed to help the duo form one of WWE’s most fun tag teams, and if the promotion decides to finally release Women’s Tag Team Championships, then these two would join the IIconics and The Boss and Hug Connection (Sasha Banks and Bayley) as favorites.
Many fans expected WWE to release the Women’s Tag Team Championships before Evolution so that there would be a tournament to crown the first tag champs at the historic all-women’s PPV on Oct. 28.
Instead, fans will probably have to wait a little bit longer. It seems like the women of WWE are excited for the opportunity to compete for another title. In an interview with The Hype Magazine’s Landon Buford, Naomi stated that having tag team titles would be “great” for the women’s division, citing the need for the women of WWE to have another championship to compete for.
"I’m so ready for it, tag teaming is so exciting, and It’ll be great for the division because it will give us another championship to fight for which we need. Being married to a tag team specialist and in my opinion one of the best to ever do it I will have all the coaching and guidance I need to be the first to hold those titles."
She also spoke about Melina, her tag team with Asuka, the possibility of her competing on “Dancing With The Stars” one day, and more in the full interview linked here.
Naomi, of course, isn’t the only WWE Superstar to express this opinion. Sasha Banks said something similar in an enlightening appearance on “Conversations with Maria Menounos”. It’s also important to note that it was Becky Lynch who initially pitched the idea of Women’s Tag Titles that could be contested among the different brands of WWE.
Prior to Stephanie McMahon’s announcement on Raw that WWE would hold an all-women’s PPV in late October, fans speculate that this historic announcement could center around an all-women’s show on the WWE Network, women’s tag titles, or both.
So it is entirely possible that WWE could announce a weekly women’s show that takes place at the same time as the Mae Young Classic 2 did (Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. ET), and the MYC 2 finals will be at Evolution. That clears up space for this show, and WWE could also announce new Tag Team Championships that could help create initial storylines for a show that brings all the women of WWE together on one brand, in addition to their appearances on NXT, Raw, NXT UK etc.
