The WWE Championship has been held proudly by AJ Styles since November 7, 2017, and The Phenomenal One has turned back challenge after challenge in his year-long title reign.

The Phenomenal One has been the one constant in the WWE in terms of world champions over the past year with Brock Lesnar rarely on TV with the Universal Championship over on Raw in that timeframe.

Styles defeated Samoa Joe at Crown Jewel to retain his title and is set for a Survivor Series rematch with Lesnar after also defeating Daniel Bryan in recent memory as well, but then what?  Let’s take a look at three possible challengers for Styles after Survivor Series.

3. Rey Mysterio

AJ Styles has made a hall of fame-caliber career out of proving the doubters wrong, but arguably nobody has done that better than Rey Mysterio.  The Master Of The 619 has carved out a hall of fame legacy himself over the past two decades-plus and his return to the WWE was one fans looked forward to.

Mysterio first returned during the 2018 Royal Rumble match and made a few appearances with the WWE since then, but his real return to the main roster came on SmackDown 1000 when he defeated United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura.  He competed in the World Cup tournament at Crown Jewel, but did not win the whole thing.

That doesn’t have to be a bad result, however, because it opens the door for several other dream matches featuring Mysterio.  One of the biggest dream matches could be a WWE Championship feud with The Phenomenal One.  It might seem a bit too early to make this feud come to light, but there’s likely not one fan that wouldn’t want to see Styles vs. Mysterio.

These are two of the greatest athletes pro wrestling has ever seen and they could tear the house down given both men’s in-ring style.  Many would question entering Mysterio into the WWE Championship picture that quickly, but it might just be worth it if this match takes place on a marquee show.  It could even carry over into multiple pay-per-views if things click.

Styles prides himself on being phenomenal, and there would be very few matches that would be more phenomenal than Styles vs. Mysterio for the WWE Championship.
