Mustafa Ali and Cedric Alexander both have sat side-by-side as respected peers atop WWE 205 Live’s Cruiserweight Division, but is WWE setting up for Alexander to turn on Ali?
On the October 31st episode of WWE 205 Live, something interesting happened. Mustafa Ali defeated Tony Nese to become #1 contender to the Cruiserweight Championship, only for Nese to attack Ali after the match. Ali was saved by Cedric Alexander. Sounds pretty standard so far, but what happened afterwards had our hearts racing.
As Cedric helped Ali off the ground, he threw Ali’s arm around him as if he were setting up for a Lumbar Check. We noticed this, and so did the crowd seeing as they went from being nearly silent to a unanimous shocked awe the instant that Cedric threw Ali’s arm around him.
Alas, it was not meant to be as the moment amounted to nothing as the Heart & Soul of 205 Live are both in good spirits with each other. For now.
I say “for now” because that moment between Cedric and Ali seemed too deliberate and calculated for it to be mistaken for anything else. We’re led to think that the moment could very well be a tease for the future, and that future sees Cedric Alexander turning heel.
Storyline wise, all of the instruments have been put in place for WWE to turn him, if that’s the direction they wanted to go in. After losing the Cruiserweight Championship to Buddy Murphy last month at WWE Super Show-Down, Cedric has been on a losing streak, such a bad losing streak that 205 Live GM Drake Maverick stripped Cedric of his contractually obligated rematch clause.
Meanwhile, as he’s been goaded every week by Lio Rush for losing his touch, Cedric’s buddy and in-ring equal Mustafa Ali has become the new #1 contender for Murphy’s title. There’s enough weight there to charge some envy and anger onto Cedric’s character, and it could be enough to cause Cedric to turn on Mustafa Ali, for real this time.
If we are to believe a heel turn from Cedric Alexander is imminent, we now have only two questions: When will it happen, and can Cedric pull off playing a heel?
As far as when, we do have a Survivor Series Cruiserweight Championship match coming up between Mustafa Ali and Buddy Murphy. Perhaps Cedric makes a run-in (maybe to even the odds) if Tony Nese is in Murphy’s corner, and this time, he fully commits to cracking Ali’s back with a Lumbar Check to cost him the title. Keep that in mind when the PPV streams on the WWE Network on November 18th.
Wondering if Cedric can pull off playing a heel is a valid question, seeing as he’s played a righteous babyface since he first got signed by WWE. Playing a heel isn’t totally out of Cedric’s expertise, however. His last year-or-so in Ring of Honor saw him playing the heel, with wrestler/manager Veda Scott as his mouthpiece. He found some success under his heel character as well, most prolifically by ending Moose’s undefeated streak.
Hopefully, if a heel turn is truly in Cedric Alexander’s future, he can produce that same level of success in WWE, if not more.
